About twice a week, I wake up with a perfectly clear and sharp mind...for two to three hours...then usually fight sleep the rest of the day.

Just to let you know that I've been cutting my pills in half for 10 years under ENDO supervision.
Jean is quite right to be cautious and double check with your own doctor but I really don't think its a big ordeal to break them in two pieces. There is a little ridge on the tablets which as far as I know is to actually allow you break it.
