Don't be nervous. I had it done too... I'm 36 as well and didn't want any of the invasive tests unless the NT screen came back with poor results. Bear in mind, the NT screen will only give you risk factors (percentage type things), but you'll at least get an idea of what your risk factors ARE before you think about the invasive stuff.

The scan itself was just an ultrasound. It was a little long because they measure a lot of things.... nasal bone, nuchal fold, arms, legs, head, etc. It's neat though because you get to see baby again! The blood work that's typically done in combo was, for me, just a blood draw that they then deposit on a piece of paper to be analyzed along with the scan. I think my results were back in about a week.

I was nervous waiting for the results too (and like you, have had a previous miscarriage, so that doesn't help) - however, despite my "advanced maternal age" designation - my risk factors all came back VERY low... like what you would expect to see on a pregnant mom in their early 20's. I felt confident then choosing NOT to do any more invasive testing.

Good luck - don't stress - and try to at least enjoy the ultrasound part where you get to see baby! Will you be finding out the gender too?

I am 34 and go for my NT on the 7th. I also have chosen to skip the evasive testing. It is not like I am not going to have the baby if there is something wrong so I would rather NOT have that worry over the next 5 months. Maybe that is not the way to look at it but if the Dr thinks for some reason I need more testing I will. They did normal prenatal blood work today, which was 7 vials worth!

I skipped all the testing that wasnt needed for preperation or safty of baby. I knew no matter what the results where that I would be keeping thebaby and was very prepared for any problems. SO I honestly dont now anything about the testing.... But either way dont be scared. Everything will work out how they are suppose to as my hubby always says everything happens for a reason

Hi hun, I never had any testing for my daughter nor will I for this one (we won't terminate if there is an problems, plus we could be worried over nothing as it is not definative!) Saying that, I have known others to have this scan and apparently the results were given straight away. Not sure about the bloodwork results though... I think you have made a great decision to skip any further tests if these results come back well, as you may stress yourself for no reason at all. Don't be nervous :) Chances are things will be absolutely fine!!! Even with the "increased risk" of age, the chance of the scan coming back suggestive of a problem is very, very slight! Just look at it as another chance to see your little one :)

Ditto what everyone here has said. I'm 42 (41 at time of conception) and we decided early on that we would not do anything invasive, regardless of what the NT test showed. We were blessed in that our results came back great - it took about a week for them to call us back with the results.

They had us talk to a genetic counselor before the ultrasound. An experience I wish my hubby had not been with me for, because he is so quick to fasten onto anything that could possibly be negative. They told me at my "advanced maternal age" before testing I had a statistical 4% chance of a baby with Downs. After testing, they said my risk was 1% - like a much younger woman. I still had to remind DH that meant a 99% likelihood that nothing was wrong. Subsequent scan looked great.

I loved the ultrasound - they are so much clearer now than they used to be. We could see a perfect profile of our tiny 2" long baby. (Better pics than we got at 18 weeks.)

We decided that no matter what, we would not do an amnio or other invasive tests. It would not change our decision to have the baby, and we felt the (slight) risk of miscarriage was too much, after we had suffered 2 losses to get here.
