it can happen to anyone....its not common one way or another but there are factors that make you more likely to have one, having scarring in your tubes, a past ectopic pregnancy, being post maternal age (i think thats what they call it), I thought I had one with this pregnancy but I didnt the pain was sharp in my side and cramps in my back, it all came and went and still does, what symptoms are you having...??? And if your blood has been drawn and its going up normally they usually dont assume it is ectopic but if you are scared you need to go to the ER because it could be very dangerous for you....Or call your Dr. asap most have answering services and will tell you what to do!

It happens in about 0.50% of pregnancies. I had one about two years ago. My symptoms were spotting, followed by about 5 days of period-like bleeding, followed by more on-and-off spotting/bleeding. (I actually didn't know I was pregnant and thought I had gotten a period that wouldn't stop). I was EXTRA tired (as I was losing a lot of blood and was anemic), and the bad cramping started later on - after about 10 days of bleeding. I would have random bouts of SEVERE cramping, sometimes stronger on one side and shooting into my leg. It was sometimes accompanied by nearly uncontrollable diarhea (as the swollen tube pushes directly on your instestines). The two things that confirmed it was ectopic: (1) my doc did a beta 48hrs apart, and the numbers went up just slightly (instead of doubling) and (2) and u/s confirmed there was nothing in the uterus.

If you are concerned - tell your doc! I dismissed my symptoms, so I probably could have caught it sooner and avoided emergency surgery.

I never imagined I'd have one. I wasn't your typical "at-risk-of-ectopic" patient....never had any reproductive surgeries, still in my early 20s, no history of ectopic, no pain whatsoever, AND my HCG was going up as normal. How did I find out my 2nd pregnancy (1st was a miscarriage) was ectopic? I had continuous, brownish-pink spotting for about 5 days straight. Once they realized my HCG was high enough to see something in the uterus, I had about 3 ultrasounds done. None of those showed a gestational sac or any uterine pregnancy. It was found at the entrance of my right tube a few days later and luckily, my tube was saved - they treated me with Methotrexate (2 doses).

I would have never guessed I had an ectopic pregnancy. I thought I was miscarrying again. Don't hesitate to go to your doctor for whatever symptom you have.
