Calcification on baby's heart?

I am 20 weeks 4 days pregnant and I went to the Dr today for my fetal assessment ultrasound. The u/s tech pointed out a bright white dot on the baby's heart and told me it was a calcium deposit. She didn't give much info about it, just that it was common... 1/20 babies get one. She said besides that, everything else looked great. I talked to the Dr afterwards and she said the same thing and wasn't so concerned about it. Said I have the option to go to a specialist or high risk Dr but it's really expensive and like she said, it may mean nothing at all. She says it is a "marker" for down syndrome, but usually down syndrome will have other markers as well, not just one. I never did the screening for birth defects either cause I know they are usually false positives and I didn't want to worry for nothing. Even though the Dr says my baby is healthy and not to worry, I can't help but worry about my child. She still wants to keep check on it to make sure it doesn't get bigger. Has anyone else had this happen to their baby?

No, not me but I am familiar with Calcium buildup in the human body. Calciphilaxation. I think I slaughtered that. Now I cant say its the exact same thing. but That is what I am familiar with. Basically a build up of calcium on the soft tissue of the human body. My uncle has this. I want to say that everything is ok and once your babys kidneys start functioning completely that deposit will go away. If the doc says is normal then go with it. But .....
I would visit that high risk ob... I would rather pay high dollar to ensure my babys health! It may only take one or two visits?! But I recomend visiting that doc.

The difference with my uncle and your baby is that my uncles kidneys has shut down, he is very ill, so his kidneys wont filter out the excess calcium. it builds on soft tissue and turns into a bone like formation.

But your baby is healthy and still developing. I would say that once your babys kidneys beging functioning at par, it will go away! :) If the doc says its normal and nothing to worry about, I would go with that. But I would also follow up withthe High risk doc too! better safe than sorry my dear!

I am currently pregnant with twins and our Baby B has what they initially called a "calcium deposit". It was later explained that actually what it is is a thicker part in the heart muscle in that part of the heart. Since there are no other signs, we were also told not to worry. It happens to about 5% of all babies and depending on your ethnicity can even be a higher percentage. If there are no other signs then no worries. They do another screening later in the second trimester as a follow up to the first because if you have a baby with downs, other signs show later. Right now there isn't anything that can be done and there isn't anything to worry about since there are no other signs of anything. I am 31 weeks and 5 days and our Baby B is healthy and doing great. My daughter had this, I found out during my 18 week scan. They did say it was a marker for down's, so I took a blood test to find out the actual probability, and it was very low. The doc said that a lot of people have it and don't even know it and that it doesn't affect anything once born.
My daughter is now 8 years old and is perfect! I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Getting the IPS screening done can't hurt though, if you are worried. If you want to know for sure then an amnio is the only way. Hope this helps!
