I found out that my medical insurance will cover 100% of the cost of an electric breast pump (if I am returning to work). I had heard that this was a possibility, so I called my insurance and it is in fact true. I would just need to get a prescription from my ob and then use one of the insurance companies health supplies suppliers.
I am not planning on returning to work, so I can't take advantage of this. But, I wanted to put this out there because I know how pricey electric breast pumps are. So, CALL YOUR INSURANCE COMPANIES! See if you can get one covered!

Even i you are not planing on returning to work, having a breast pump can be a useful thing sometimes. The on I recommend is the Medela Pump in Style. After you no longer need it, you can always sell it to someone who will make good use of it on sites like Craigslist or Kijijji, or even give it to a mom who desperately wants to bf but does not have the $$$ to buy a good, hi-quality pump. I bet you could find a dozen such ladies right here, and anyone of them would jump at the chance to have such a pump and pay you any shipping costs, if yo decide that you really do not need it after all.

I am insured thru my work and I wouldn't be comfortable lying and saying that I was returning to work to get the pump. I bought a manual pump--medela harmony. It has great reviews. At Baby Depot Burlington Coat Factory it's in sale right now--it was under $30.

of course not...you do not want to lie and commit insurance fraud or anything. You have a great point to check it out with the insurer, because perhaps some insurance companies will cover this cost regardless of whether you go back to work or not. What is important though is to have an md's prescription in the event that they do cover it.. I do not know if it is the same in the US, but if yo have a prescription and your insurance does not cover it, in Canada you can at least deduct a portion of it from your income tax. So, get that prescription!

I would have to say that the medella pump in style was a LIFE SAVER for me. I would not have been able to continue breasffeeding my son for 22 months! It seems like breastmilk gets tempermental in the first 3 months and needs to find a happy balance. When I would have a dry spell, I would pump dry for 10 after each feeding on my breasts and the next day or 2, BAM, it was magic! I am definately going to buy new parts and use this pump again. But this time around I am going to start my back up milk supply earlier, that way when I have a dry spell, no stress! lol

I just wanted to mention that pumps like the pump in style, harmony, swing etc, are single patient use products.
