I had an IUD prior to getting pregnant, the nonhormonal paragard IUD, because I cannot take birth control because of migraines headaches, as well as anxiety and depression.
It was the worst decision, I've ever made.
It caused extreme bleeding, and terrible cramps. I had to go to the emergency room because I was bleeding so much. I had it removed a week after getting it put it. I also got pregnant less than a month later.
Unfortunately, birth controls with hormones are much more effective, and they make for an easier, lighter period. They are also more effective. But with people like us who can't handle the hormones it doesnt leave us much option :(

Thanks for the info. The doctor did tell me that cramping was a side effect of those. I didn't know how severe it could be. That is why I am pregnant now - never was able to take anything...

I didn't want to use hormonal bc either. For the 6 years we were married before we tried to get pregnant, we used condoms and a separate spermicide with no problems. Using two methods like this *correctly* can be very effective!

Then when we started TTC, we got pregnant the second month :)

i have never been on bc before but my aunt has an iud and loves it. so thats kind of what im leaning for but havent really talked to my doc about it yet.

i am on the mirena and i really think it was the best choice because the non hormonal one makes you cramp and bleed heavily and i dont even get my period with ths and it lasts five years and after this if you still do not want kids you can have another put in
