Hi everyone,
I'm midway through week 21 with my first pregnancy and for more than a month I've been having trouble on and off with lower back pain. Basically, if I do any significant physical activity for more than 1 1/2 hours on a given day -- doing some tourism or a small hike, gardening, a long walk, carrying anything for any amount of time-- I will have an achy back that evening. On more than one occasion, I've overdone it and the achy stiffness has lasted several days. Before my pregnancy I never had any back problems. I'm 35 and am in decent physical shape (not an athlete, but not a complete couch potato either). I wonder if the pregnancy is going to permanently affect my back? For those of you who've had back pains and have already had children -- does the back pain subside when the baby is born? Or did your back aches continue?

The back ache should go away after you have the baby. I've never had back trouble, and for me it's terrible, but it's only on one side. I wish I could tell you it gets better, but mostly you just gotta suck it up for the next few months. If it gets too bad you should talk to your doctor about physical therapy. There isn't much they can do, but the deep tissue massages I get at physical therapy have helped a bit.

I've never had back problems either, but with all three of my pregnancies, I've had an achey back. It's terrible. I don't really have to do any physical activity at all. Just my daily routine, by the end of the day, I can barely stand anymore. Every time I've had my babies, (2, I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant) it's gone away almost as soon as the baby is born. I wouldn't worry too much, it will get better, just one of those things we have to endure while pregnant. Good luck to you.

Today I was watching a soccer game with some friends at a restaurant (i.e. hard wooden chairs). The game lasted two hours, and we were at the restaurant for three ... and my back is killing me from just sitting in an uncushioned seat. What surprises me is that my back would ache when my belly that big yet. I'm sure that it will get worse before it gets better. I may start doing some stretching exercises, to see if that helps. Thanks for your feedback. It's good to know that you believe the back pain won't last. I've been worrying that it might.
