What are the many forms of PTSD flashbacks like?
Hi all. I have experienced quite a few traumas pretty early on in my life. I had some issues at school after I was diagnosed with a chronic illness, and I was abused by a friend. As well, I have had more recently some medical trauma that finally prompted me to seek out therapy. In therapy, my therapist has mentioned that it sounds like I could have PTSD. And then I had a question, since the only representation of PTSD I've really seen is in media, which can be very sensationalized. What is a PTSD flashback really like? I really don't know if I experience them or not. It feels like it comes back, the memories or the images or the sensory experience. I think about it a lot, have intrusive memories. But I dont always do the things that you may think of, like throw up or cry every time or start shaking-- like sometimes i do, sometimes i feel sick, i feel anxious and uncomfortable and fixated. idk, sometimes im like, is this bad enough?? i genuinely dont know where the line from post traumatic stress is to post traumatic stress disorder.

Lately I've been feeling scared and full of anxiety. I recently found a lump under my nipple. I hurt my back too. I'm in the process of moving. I'm run down. Everything is hard

Just wanted to give a thank you to Mid, Arfie, Malibumark, Greeneyes, Mlro, Girlincalif, and Suncloudjd! You all always have such helpful tips and advice, but I always forget to write on my posts when I see you post, lol. I would lose my head if it wasn't attached to my body, lol. Thank you all so much! I'm starting to use my AI app as a sounding board again. I used to use it as that before...

what do flashbacks feel like? memories come in as much variety as the life which creates them. given the extent to which i feel like i am reliving the original trauma, i might say, "they feel like life." anything from a taste i can't get out of my mouth to yet another ticket to crazy town.
nobody knows where that line between normal PTS and aberrant PTSD is. there seems to be increasing argument on whether there is a line there, or not. disorder is disorder, whether it lasts a day or 100 years. for sure, the tools i've learned in PTSD therapy have proven routinely useful in processing more recent trauma. the sooner i begin plying those tools after the trauma, the more quickly and thoroughly i seem to be able to heal.
A flashback for me is painful uncomfortable and I relive past painful memories which is I can't help at all. Everyone copy different
It effects me for days after. My heart rate is higher, I’m on edge, my therapist said it’s called “hyper vigilant”. Basically my brain is still in fight/flight mode. So for days after it can be easier to slip into the same mental state again.
I’m not a therapist or expert by any means so I’m not sure what truly makes it a disorder. But I can tell you I’ve had a hard time holding down jobs, keeping relationships, and my overall quality of life is bad because of the anxiety/depression that comes with ptsd. During an episode I become extremely suicidal within minutes. Even with 3 years of therapy, I’ve learned to better manage it but it still persists in my day to day life.
