Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Support Group
Find support with others who have gone through a traumatic experience. Whether you have chronic or acute PTSD, we are here for you.
Finally, they released me from the hospital. It was an awful experience. Just one example: to check on how my recovery from pneumonia was progressing and my kidney disease recovery was progressing, they drew blood every 3 hours for testing.
However, I have a really acute PTSD startle response, which is why I live alone. If you come up on me unannounced, I will not only hit the ceiling, I may also accidentally take you with me. I hit somebody by accident with my elbow once that way. I felt horrible about it, because domestic violence, along with rape and combat, is one of the trauma categories that gave me PTSD to start with.
So I told my doctor and nurses I had PTSD and for their sake, please don't sneak in my room to draw blood for testing. Announce yourselves. Did they listen? No. One of the nurses actually sneaked all the way in to my room to see if she could start taking blood when I was still sleeping. Can you believe that? I woke up with her needle in my arm, but managed not to lose it anyway. Other night she sneaked and tapped me on my shoulder. That time she did hit my startle response and I shouted and jumped hard. She laughed and laughed, thinking it was funny.
I'm convinced most people enter the health professions because they want to help people heal. But I've learned there are a few who like to watch people suffer, it gets them off. She was one of the latter.
Being in the hospital served its purpose. My IV antibiotics got my pneumonia to heal faster that oral antibiotics ever could have. And my IV saline hydrated me faster to get my kidneys going again more quickly that I could have done at home, too. But triggering my PTSD startled response served no purpose except to entertain a couple of nurses who need to find a new source of entertainment.
I am so glad to be out of that place. Thanks for your support while I was in there.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Big puma purrs and puma power.
I'm sorry nurses didn't respect ur ptsd symptom as well as they should.
Hugs.
Glad you survived and are back with us. Hope you are catching up on your sleep now that you are home.
Welcome back.
Prayers for a short recovery. Good thing classes are over so you aren't missing anything and can focus on self care and getting well. hugs
Hope being home you can rest and re-charge Muji. Hugs
The character of Randle McMurphy had always seemed dumb to me in being so non-compliant as a patient, and so self-pitying, when it seemed to me if he'd just tried to communicate with staff the conflict with them would have been resolved. And the character of sadistic Nurse Ratched seemed cliche to me, too. But, holy cow, in this hospital stay I found myself experiencing in real life all of those Hollywood movie cliches. And not getting the fortune and fame from it Nicholson got, either, like that Oscar he won for the movie.
Being validated by you about my real life bad nursing experiences to report them, though, gave me room to highlight a positive. Of all of the nurses I met, one third had been my students!! :-) None of them startled me, either. They got me.
It's good to remember the good stuff. One of my nurses, a guy named Max, got me so well that he sat down with me to look at pictures of San Cristobal, Mexico, where I'm going next month and where I plan to retire. I think he was serious about accepting my invitation to visit during one of my stays.
He gave me his personal email so I could tell him how to buy one of the cheap plane tickets I get, so I sent him an email with that info now right away. Even if he doesn't ever visit, it was really nice for a former student of mine to be my nurse. He wasn't Nurse Ratched and I was treated with respect and regard for my future plans. It got me through. Bless you, Max.
I’m glad you’re outta there <3
2ly, I believe the professional thing to do is to report the situation to the in charges. For the sake of humane treatment of future patients..
You are entitled to be treated humanely. Laughing at you isn't okay.

I was in the health club during my junior and senior year in high school. I always was assigned to care for the senior hospital patients, most were from the nursing homes. Feeding them. Brushing their hair. Simple little things. I of course took the opportunity to talk to them. Listen to them. Hold their hands. I instinctively conveyed love and and a deep simile with direct eye contact. It's was a great source of life affirming joy when they accepted and responded to my interactions. They seem to recover faster. It was during these times that I discovered the cruelty that some health care givers were capable of. I never gave ground to these inhumane people.
.
Hold them accountable. Please.
The other one.... should change profession. Honestly. That was a total no-go. Sorry you had to go through this.
Healing hugs, muji, I hope you get the rest you need and deserve.
Ir's nice to be free of all of that. Funny thing, though: I woke up at 3a.m. on the dot last night ready for my phlebotomist to stick me with the needle. Odd how fast the mind can adapt to something like that; I was only in the hospital 4 nights!
I appreciate your support. I made phone calls this morning to find out where I report unprofessional nurses, but I want to be sure to report nurses like my former student Max in the process. As I look back, his being on the night shift Friday night was the positive turning point in my healing.
I am so glad that you're home...… Loved One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest..... Probably the best film I've ever seen to take in stigma and power mongering in the mental health realm …. Sadly it goes on
I'm am so glad that you're home and on the mend sweetie.... Big hug.....xo
