I’m exactly the same as you chey. Talking it out just made me feel worse and I’m not sure that is the best way to go for me at least. It felt like scab picking and reliving trauma and didn’t really help. I know others see it differently, but I’ve also had therapists agree with that view.
What did help was coming on here and realising my experience and reactions were the same as many others on here and also realising I wasn’t alone. I could also tap into their helpful experiences and insights, but cautiously.
I also did a mindfulness/meditation course and was taught Acceptance & Commitmence by a therapist which is accepting what happened and that you can’t change it, but empowering yourself to committing to changing what you can. I also get a lot of comfort and relief exploring Buddhist philosophy which is now being incorporated into a lot of modern therapy. I’m far from perfect and still just doing the best I can but that’s life for everyone.
I also believe there’s nothing wrong with the things we use to distract us. Sheesh, labels. Call it self care or a coping strategy and it all looks a bit different.
