To the hardware store to buy bread?

It's an expression I learned from the wisdom of arfie here, and it fits what happened to me today. In the psych class I teach at the community college, we get an author to visit us once a semester, the author who wrote one of our textbooks. My students are nursing majors, so the idea is they care since they want jobs in health care.
They didn't, at least not today. Cell phone texting, sleeping through the presentation, writing notes to each other, googling on laptops, you name it.
It was rude to our guest. I took it kind of personally myself until I realized that my expectations were off base. The guest was inspiring, but to expect the others to be inspiring was like somebody going to a hardware store to buy bread, as arfie puts it.
Catch yourself expecting the impossible from people? Anybody else been to the hardware store for a loaf of whole wheat lately?

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

First, I hope everyone is doing well, and continuing to fight that good fight! Keep up the great work on yourselves; I'm rooting for all of you!So, I started doing therapy at the beginning of the year, when I was in my most depressed state, but with my therapist, I made big changes and steps in the right direction. But, over a month ago, she couldn't take my insurance anymore, and I had to stop...
I would never be that rude in class... or out, i hope.... Muji, come teach nearer me, i will take classes and show them what is what..

82 people showed up to hear her! We're not a residential campus with dorms, but a commuter community college, so people didn't just walk across campus to come. They commuted back from home. Wow.
And only a handful texted during her speech! The overwhelming majority asked questions and gave comments you would have thought came from here they were so deep. The paid attention to each other, and built on each others' comments with generosity and care for each other. Wow again.
It made this whole tough semester worth it in one night. I'll try to remember that in the next month. We still have 30 days to go until school lets out and energy is rationed.
Nice. The last two weeks have been so tough, and then such a nice surprise happens and students open up their hearts. Little miracles do happen from time to time. I got mine just in time, as you can see from my original post starting this thread.
Thanks to those who posted in support before tonight's PTSD speaker gave her talk in the auditorium. You are great support to have in between miracles, let me tell you. I DID get bread at the hardware store after all. Go figure.
