My Spanish student who got an F at midterm for maintaining a 15.2% average in her work on her online MySpanishLab went to the dean about me yesterday. The student emailed me 4 times last week trying to negotiate the midterm F grade, but there was just nothing I could do for her with that low of a percentage average.
Mind you, the student emailed me, but has never spoken to me all semester. It hasn't helped her learn Spanish for her to stay on her cell phone every day with earbuds in her ears.
I try not to take it personally and to assume maybe she's avoiding participation in the class because she's painfully shy. After all, she has perfect attendance in coming to the classroom to sit.
The dean's investigation into my grading is still stressful for me, though since I have tenure I'll still have a job. I'm not asking for my support against the student nor the dean today. It's that I'm kind of tired. I have kidney disease, with only 40% of my kidney function left, so every midterm in every semester I get tired. I'm just asking for support for me to be wise and measured in my responses as this complaint is investigated where I work.
My Chair backed me up because the story she heard was that the Dean overheard the student dropping my class. Then the Dean took on the "case" on her own initiative, and that was when the student made the complaint that was "investigated." Fortunately, it was investigated to no effect.
My Chair's story left me coping with some paranoia about the Dean's disposition toward me. But I figure if I don't do anything wrong, if she has some disposition it still gets no ammunition. Nonetheless, it doesn't make mine a workplace filled with ease.
