I often feel like rocking and curling up into a ball but don't. I have felt like this during counselling sometimes but tend to withdraw more and feel awkward. After all, I am in my 50s! I'm sure that my counsellor has seen lots of behaviour and probably wouldn't bat an eyelid if I did curl up and rock.
Deep breathing is something else I use, telling myself that I'm safe, distraction techniques, going on a walk or changing the setting. My counsellor gave me a whole swag of distress tolerance cards to use in different situations so I use these and see what I think is appropriate in the situation.
Ozmum, age is no matter! I'm almost 19 and I rock myself to sleep and cling to a stuffed animal. Have no shame in what makes you feel comfortable. If you would feel better if you rock yourself, do it. My therapist totally encourages that for me. Although I do have the issue of needing to comfort myself in public and being unable to use the best method I have (because I don't carry blankets with me haha)
Teenie, you're in the right spot. Everyone here has been really helpful for me, and I've not been here long. Message me if you'd like. I'd love to chat.
My other big one is giving myself hand massages. helps ,e focus and relieve tension too.
but my go to is my fleece blanket, i admit!
Oh, an dI have a bac-up, he found the cutest ever little beanie baby cat that goes in my shoulder bag so if I don't have pockets, I still have my cuddles!
