My hero, Jose Mujica, for whom I chose my username mujicaptsd, is coming to the US and will be 2 hours from where I live on Monday May 12.
He lived through the war in Uruguay and was tortured there like I was. He was shot twice, also, and is open about having PTSD. He is now the president of Uruguay, where I grew up.
He once was a real bad guy in his youth. Now he gives away 90% of his salary to charity. He's known as the world's poorest president for that. He takes his 3 legged dog, a rescue, with him everywhere, and won't live in the president's mansion. He drives a 1989 VW and won't wear a tie.

He's not my hero because of his politics at all. It's just that he survived all that and is so highly functional. That's how he's my role model.
He's coming to visit the US capital. I have to work that day, but I'd LOVE to play hooky from work and drive down and meet him in person.
Anybody else have any real live PTSD heroes for us to use as role models when it gets to us?

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

First, I hope everyone is doing well, and continuing to fight that good fight! Keep up the great work on yourselves; I'm rooting for all of you!So, I started doing therapy at the beginning of the year, when I was in my most depressed state, but with my therapist, I made big changes and steps in the right direction. But, over a month ago, she couldn't take my insurance anymore, and I had to stop...
I think having heroes is very important. Jesus is my biggest best hero.
I can deeply respect a politician who isn't in it for money and power, but just seems to want to do good in the world.
That's what this fellow seems like.
As for PTSD heroes... You and the rest of the DS PTSD forum members. You're showing me so much and helping so much.
I suppose a living hero of mine would be Iyanla VanZant, as she, too, is highly functional. Not because of her t.v. prominence, but because I so related to many of her personal challenges years ago through the books she wrote.
More heroes living are those on this board (Yes, this includes YOU), who share their experience strength, and hope in recovery.
I'd love to go ... WITH you :-)

Okay, okay... Officially hanging my head in shame. Reprting for my official kick from his 3 legged dog.
My PTSD hero died while soldiers suffering combat PTSD were still being shot for cowardice. Of course, she was never diagnosed, but her formative years made mine look like a Father Knows Best episode. That only gave her the spit and fire to go on to become a founding mother of blind and deaf education in the US. Even my favorite master of cynicism, Mark Twain, gave her respectful salutes. PTSD heroes? i was gonna say something a cheesy and poetic, but i can't. i swore off heroes. but i do know people who are awesome because they well frankly they just are. and ya'll are among those people.
