I've just emerged from pandemic teacher hell, my friends. Tonight I had to teach via live streaming (like Zoom, but a cheaper knock off called Teams my community college uses). It was a total disaster. The college infrastructure is just not there, so in one hour of trying to teach the system crashed six (yes, 6) times!! Wha-?
I only have 99 days until I retire from 40 years of teaching, but it looks like there's humiliation ahead before I get to finish my career. My IT folks responsible for maintaining and/or fixing the system have gone rogue, which didn't matter until the pandemic put live streaming in such demand.
The head of IT is working in politics right now and has lost touch with her own department to the point that she couldn't run its system herself. Her second in command is a bitter ex-teacher who got fired from the classroom and so out of sour grapes she bullies or undermines any teacher who comes to her for help. In 10 years I have never heard of her helping a teacher once, as per her job description. The third in command got fired last year for failing to answer a cry for help from a distance learning aide (not an instructor) that he ignored for six (6) weeks while the system failed daily for all six (6) weeks. Still, 5 days a week for 6 weeks (that's 30 days) he didn't even leave his office to come help in the classroom as per his job description. Student outcry that got to the college's board members is what got him fired, not instructor feedback.
Oh, my God. 99 days to retirement looked sweet, but 99 days teaching on computers that crash 6 times per hour is looking long now. These are simply nutty working conditions.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.
In any case, much support. ninety-nine days stuck in that hell, 99 days to go, take a day down, bury it in the ground, 98.... OK, yeah, lame.

Now, about these other 3 classes, I just don't know. It kind of makes you gun shy about pulling the trigger on live streaming these classes again, but their teaching has to happen. Oh, boy.

"Widespread Internet Outage Hits U.S. East Coast

Thousands of users across the U.S. East Coast faced widespread internet outage from providers including Verizon Communications Inc on Tuesday, disrupting services offered by Google, Amazon, Zoom, Slack and other tech firms.
Verizon, a major broadband services provider in the United States, alerted users about a fiber cut in Brooklyn.
Spokesman Rich Young said the company was “aware of an issue impacting the quality” of its broadband service “throughout the Northeast corridor.” He added Verizon has “already seen service levels start to restore.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is reviewing reports of the outage.
Acting FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel said on Twitter the regulator’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau “is working to get to the bottom of what is going on.”
Outage monitoring website Downdetector.com also showed reports of outages at Comcast Corp, Roblox Corp and Slack Technologies Inc.
Amazon.com Inc’s cloud computing arm said on its website that connectivity issues related to its services has been resolved.
It had earlier said it was investigating connectivity issues with an internet provider, which was causing disruptions to AWS services, and to many online services that rely on it.
A spokesperson for Google said the company was aware of reports regarding issues affecting access to some of its products, but had not found issues with its services.
Users on retail trading platforms Charles Schwab Corp and Robinhood also reported operational problems in the market session for the second day in a row, according to Downdetector.com.
'Earlier this morning, we experienced an issue with bank balances not displaying accurately that has since been resolved. Trading functionality was not impacted,” a Charles Schwab spokeswoman said.
Robinhood said its customers on the East Coast may have had issues with accessing the internet due to Verizon’s outage, but its platform was operational.
