My PTSD hypervigilance is such that I can't discern what to do. I'm thinking over whether to fly out on Sunday to Mexico for Spring Break or not because of the coronavirus outbreak. Do you think I should risk it and go or should I stay home and let the USD$400 round trip plane ticket go?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

The airlines have promised to refund fares in this country and yesterday I heard the senate committee elicit a similar promise in the States.
Only you can decide if you wish to take the risk. 80% of people get a mild version of Covid 19 but the older a person is the more the risk of more serious illness increases exponentially after age 50.
Then you have to consider your own mental health. You have been looking forward to this trip for so long. Can you self soothe and destress if you have to remain at home? Is there an alternative place you could go for a break if the airline would allow you to change your flight to somewhere else?
Whatever you do, be as safe as you can reasonably be as we do not want to lose you to this very serious threat. You have survived so much.
It is better to be hypervigilant and alive than to dismiss the science and suffer needlessly or at worst die.
Personally, I would not risk travel from one infected country to another unless I wanted to get the disease myself which I will admit is quite tempting.
please check what your alternative/better choices might be before making this decision.
Of course there are no cases in airports because nobody lives in airports but infected people are passing through them every day now.
I apologise if I come across as alarmist but I have been following all of this since the announcement of the first case found in china and am appalled that people (some people) are so complacent about such a high death rate. In a matter of weeks the number has risen from approx 106 a little over three weeks ago to over 3,000 now. This is higher than the rate of the spanish flu pandemic in 1918 which was 2% Covid 19 is 3.4 and influenza is .1. Just sit with the math which speaks for itself.
Keep us posted on your decision and again please just be safe.
I agree that airports aren't great places to be right now.... I would just be more careful that's all....
Big hug..... This really sux…. My landlord/roomie is doing the same..... xo
Personally, I would wait. You have kidney issues, as well as heart right now, and it sounds like it leads to pneumonia and organ failure. Your health is worth more than the $400.
Try to wait it out the best you can until they come up with a vaccine (hopefully soon?).
Perhaps summer will be able to provide a safer trip where you can enjoy it and not worry about coronavirus.
Look at spring break as a time to rest and recoup at home. You have had a few rough weeks!
But that's just my take on it... better safe than sorry. ;)
Check the area to see if there are any cases, like Suncloud said.
But even if the area is clear, that doesn’t mean it’ll stay that way. And I think you’re at a bigger risk by going to an airport then by Actually being in Mexico. There’s a cruise ship with 2000 people off the coast of San Francisco that’s quarantined right now. What happens when Someone is found with the virus on a plane, possibly your plane?
Is it possible to get a credit from the airline, given the circumstances? You could call them and ask. Say you’re concerned about travel and you’d like to turn your flight into a credit travel later instead. It’s worth a shot. Ultimately it’s up to you. If you do go, take every possible caution that you can. Good luck in making your decision. I know how much you love Mexico and want to go. But now might not be the best time.
After thinking it over, it's a gut level decision, I realize, and in my gut I guess I'm a fatalist like shaky. I've taught community college death and dying classes to nursing students every day for 9 years now. So final fate is not only something I think about every day personally, I also think about it professionally every day just to pay the rent. So I'm given my final fate some thought.
I've not asked the universe to give me a pass on death, since it comes some day to us all. I've just asked if maybe I get a pass on dying in lots of suffering or dying stupidly. Elvis Presley's death on the toilet while trying to overcome constipation counts for me as the latter. Dying of coronavirus would count for me as the former.
Oddly, I'm not afraid to die, but I am very afraid to suffer. The body aches, fever, and other coronavirus symptoms are the kind of suffering I'm afraid of. I've had pneumonia before, and it was suffering I could do without.
On the other hand, if I stay in the USA and get the coronavirus anyway here, I'd feel pretty stupid. One thing I've learned about myself in teaching those death and dying classes is that if possible I'd like to end my days as an elder where I spent them as a child--in Mexico. Not in the US.
So, on the fence as I am about the wisdom of going on this trip right now in this coronavirus epidemic, that tips the scale slightly in favor of going on the trip to Mexico in the coming week. I might chicken out at the last minute. But if I'm to risk getting the coronavirus I'd rather risk it being active than sitting around passively.
I might regret this, I know. I can imagine being sick in my hotel room running a fever next week and cursing myself for traveling, I do know. Thanks for helping me see all sides of my decision so I could own them in spite of my PTSD hypervigilance confusion. I'm grateful.
Mr. President is also talking closing all 4 borders. That may not be today but maybe a tweet away. You could be stranded until tested, before a return is allowed messing with your work schedule.
If you change your mind...there are many places to choose from to start your farewell tour of the states. Airnbs can be affordable especially if they are also have cancels.
Then there is also your own health and conditions. We are in the vulnerable age group.
Hugs, J.
