Wasn't sure I even wanted to go down this road, but I'm feeling a bit guilty and overwhelmed. I have PTSD and Depression. It's all work related and I'm presently in the process of retiring. Witnessed much more trauma than anyone should in a life time. Anyhow, I've found that self injury, in my case cutting, seems to be a coping mechanism for me. Not a helpful one by any stretch, but a coping mechanism none the less! I'm a male in my 40's and had always thought cutting was a way for teenagers do deal with the angst of growing up. The cutting it seems redirects my mind from the emotional pain to the physical pain, which I can tolerate. I'm presently getting help to deal with this and put an end to it by finding a more constructive way of managing the emotional pain. I've been suicidal in the past and am scared that I'll do the job if I keep this behavior up. Anyhow, I'm just curious to know if I'm the only one out here doing this.

I am a cutter and have PTSD as well so I can say I understand the feeling of hopelessness that you are feeling. There is also a Self-Injury group you may want to join on here. But anyways, have you thought of attending support groups in your community. Check out www.nami.org and find some in your community. It may help to make you feel less alone. Just like an addict getting into recovery, you have to get around those that understand. Hang in there.

and since you are retiring you have a lot of free time to hit some support group meetings. You can do it and make it through if you choose to do so..

Thanks so much for your reply. I haven't thought about any support groups, so I will take that idea and explore it. The feeling of being alone is anxiety provoking and it helps to know I'm not the only one out here. I am on the Self-Injury group too. I know a lot of the reasons that people cut, but I wasn't so sure that people with PTSD used it as a way of coping also. And, being in my 40's and male, I didn't seem to fit the the profile of someone who cuts, so I was even more concerned about it. I will hang in there and thanks for the words of encouragement! You hang in there also!

My doctor was the first one that even mentioned the idea to me that cutting was a coping mechanism. I had never looked at it that way before. I guess it's just getting over the stigma associated with it. I'm learning along this path of healing that I'm as normal as everyone else: we all have problems to face every day. Your doctors approach, and hence, your approach, is very helpful! It's essentially the same approach that my doctor takes. I think that knowing that I'm not alone in this is comforting in a way. Thanks for your comment and support.

I'm aware of two people on this board in their mid thirties who SI. 51% mentioned she's in her 60s. So no, it is not only the young who do it. I hope you find some peace.

I am almost 40 and I cut and do some other forms of SI.......it's definitely a coping mechanism, among other things.
