Not too sure how off topic this is. My plants and animals are such a huge part of my personal therapy that even the most academic members of my therapy net encourage it as bonafide therapy. My "Poultry Processing" class is tomorrow. ( http://www.edenscovefarm.com/classes.html ) I sure am feeling allot of emotional whiplash over it. I am riding allot of anxiety waves this morning.
The remaining 4 chicks of my "chick buying binge" http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Post-Traumatic_Stress_Disorder/forum/20948519-transference-vs-channeling are still sleeping in the rabbit hutch. They sure are looking crowded in there. The smallest of them is nearly as big as the old hens. The biggest of them is easily the biggest member of by bird menagerie. She/he is a short-lived cross breed which has an average 6 month life span. He/she is beginning to look like she/he is living with allot of pain.
I am a card-carrying Meatenarian. Don't hand me that crap about little lambs being cuter than my carrots. . . Are you invalidating all the love I poured into that carrot?
But. . . for all my survivalist bravado, I have never processed my own meat.
Today it feels like allot to "Process."
Prayers -by whatever name- appreciated.

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.
BTW, I find carrots quite cute. And I eat 'em.
That said....If you perhaps break it into its "engineering" components? Chop 'em, gut 'em, drain 'em (into the pig food, by the way, ugh), scald 'em, pluck 'em, was the way my grandma did it. She'd apologize to them before, and during, the process. She had names for all her hens and chicks and cockerels and so on, and also the cows and pigs, and even her different garden patches and wild birds. (I get it from her.)
It's not easy, and it's not easy on any level, emotional or otherwise. You have my support and prayers.
Find myself musing the philosophies that we SHOULD be that connected to the living sacrifices (including plants) which are necessary to maintain our own life. Even our pills come from somewhere in nature. Just how delusional is it to philosophically place ourselves outside the natural food cycle?
I have been trying to remember the name of African bush tribe which maintains a tradition of thanking their food for its sacrifice.
Still sorting. . . Processing? ? ?
My brain is sizzling and popping like drops of water on an August-baked tin roof. I have a painful knot in my intestines that is bloating erratically. Ouch.
When I can focus on this day, I find my thought/feelings sliding through the many critter companions I have lost in my 60+ year journey. That was ALLOT of companions. I really do bond more deeply with critters than humans. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that I understand critters better than I understand humanity.
Some of the endings were brutal. Some? Is there an easy way to lose a loved one. I have out-lived every critter I have ever loved.
Sorting. . .
Advice welcome. I feel like I am . . . In a place I have never been before?
I understand you hold the chicken upside down by his legs, and he'll pass out, basically?
Then you crack-the-whip with the passed out chicken, holding his head. Like you were snapping a towel?
Snaps the neck before the chicken can come to and figure out what's happening.
Or a very sharp cleaver and chop the head off.
Either way, the bird's not going to have time to feel much at all.
...I feel really sorry for those meat hybrids, they can barely walk after a while.
Sorry you are going to eat someone you know. This is why if I ever go back to eating meat, I'm going to learn how to fish and hunt.
It's okay if you've never been here before. Blessings on you, and we're holding you up if you feel shaky, okay?
Gentle hugs as you sort.
J.
