Narcissist got current a couple years ago, in pop culture, but it is a legit dx, so I try to only use it that way myself. As in, Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

One reason it's getting more "air time", I think, is that the "famous for being famous" phenomenon has been analyzed by talking head shrinks on TV as "manifestations of narcissistic personality disorder".

But that's all my opinion, and what the he** do I know? I took the NPD screening test, because I was so freaked about being one, and I scored so low my psychiatrist had me re-take it a month later. Nope. I'm below-normal-narcissism, nowhere near anyone with a reality TV program.

It does seem to be more out there. My therapist gave me a book on narcism a few months ago to understand my Mom. Both my therapist (couples and individual) think my Mom has all 7 traits of narcissistic disorder. My therapist says Narcissistic parents produce either a narcissistic child or a "pleaser" child. Pleaser child is the opposite of the narcissist, they, like me, pleased the narcissist to survive. I feel I lost my identity though, however, it is coming back with therapy.

My first official therapy date was in 1972, when I was 18. I was already well-exposed to self-help books by then, as well as the amateur psychoanalysis habits. To the best of my knowledge, there is not a single dx in my substantial case file that goes by the same name now as it did in 1972. I sometimes wonder if it is safe to claim that I suffer "Psycho Analysis Disorder."

Slang will come. Slang will go. Names will change. But for the sake of keeping a sense of cohesion in my personal recovery, I feel like I need to put extra work into sorting the wheat (recovery) from the chaff (slang).

My speech defect made it so that I could read and write long before I could talk. Turns out that was around the time it was first being officiated as a psychiatric disorder.
