Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Support Group
Find support with others who have gone through a traumatic experience. Whether you have chronic or acute PTSD, we are here for you.
I have been attending my support group because the alternative is sitting in the house alone. But it’s been a year and a half since I started going and I’ve yet to find the right people there.
The right people listen.
They don’t say things like, “do you have someone to talk to,” when I tell them I feel overwhelmed.
Or “wallowing in sadness is self indulgence,” when I say I’ve been crying and unable to eat all weekend.
They don’t tell me I can share anything with them but tell me to contact a crisis line when I say I’m not doing okay.
They don’t hear my struggle in dealing with Moms passive aggressive behavior and make excuses for her.
They don’t hear where I am and tell me what I NEED to do.
They just listen, point me to God and pray. That’s not what anyone does but it’s what all these people keep saying I need. And then no one who’s female can be that and I’m certainly not talking to men. It’s always been easier to talk to guys and be friends with guys but I’m not crossing those boundaries with men. That’s weird. They wouldn’t understand at all. And I don’t want their hugs. No offense to any of you guys and maybe I’d talk to you but not hug you because you would get it and I can’t hug you but I’m just not a hugger if the opposite sex. I’m hardly a hugger of women. I am frustrated and I don’t want to go anymore. I might go to a new one at a different church or find something else entirely but for this week, I’m staying home. Mostly because I’m tired and not okay and that’s not okay with others.

Hey All...I hope that you have a lovely, peaceful beginning of your weekI have a bunch of chores that need doing but may put them off til tomorrow and just hang out with my landlord/roomie todayWhat about you?...Anything special going on?Have a great day and take good care of you!!..Xo

I was in a face to face support group for 5 years that then went into crisis. Our leader was a great motherly type, and super informed about mental health, an activist in NAMI, all kinds of stuff. I looked up to her so.
Then she killed herself. Wow. It shook me and all of us to the core. Our support group just fell apart, it went in all directions. It's been years now and I got through the grief and confusion, but at the time it was really disconcerting and chaotic.
The lesson I took away from it was that we're all working on mental health in support groups, no matter how long and no matter if we're the leader. When I accepted the honor of CL here on DS, I made a commitment to myself not to pull back and pretend that as leader I didn't need support just like everybody else. I made a commitment to myself to post a need I have once a week, at least, so I don't end up like she did.
Support groups, just like individuals, have their ups and downs. So trust yourself about how you feel about yours, and go to a new one at a different church if you want to. It's your recovery, ya know.
This might be folks that are doing their best but have really no idea of your suffering or what can help you......xo
