I teach a psych class at a community college. I only have a master's degree in the subject, but sometimes students drop by my office to talk about some deep things, and I listen. If need be, I refer them to a counselor.
Today a student came by after class and told me her mom is schizophrenic. Schizophrenia often shows up for the first time in people during what would traditionally be their college years.
My student wasn't only shaken up by seeing her mom's condition, but since she's college age as my student, she worried she'd become schizophrenic, too.
I know I carry a lot with my PTSD, as we all do. But my heart went out to this young woman's particular struggle in her youth. It reminded me of other mental health scares out there. Of course, I referred her. Send her supportive vibes, if you can.

First, I hope everyone is doing well, and continuing to fight that good fight! Keep up the great work on yourselves; I'm rooting for all of you!So, I started doing therapy at the beginning of the year, when I was in my most depressed state, but with my therapist, I made big changes and steps in the right direction. But, over a month ago, she couldn't take my insurance anymore, and I had to stop...
Schizophrenia is treatable. There are things that can help those with EDS. Winston Churchil said, "we have nothing to fear but fear itself".. we can deal with things.
Realizing now, in my forties, that my dad was seriously screwball possibly clinically mentally ill? Hits like a hammer. So at that age, I can't imagine it, paritcularly with that shadow of inherited illness there. Big support her, and big purrs to you for helping her.
The anxiety of taking on the traits of family dysfunction is an entirely different subject. I bet I am not the only child abuse survivor on this board whose parents were too perfect for diagnosis. I still wonder if those of us who have a name for it are the lucky ones.
Prayers in progress for your student, muji. Ya done good.
