So, today is the first time, I have heard of the term maladaptive daydreaming. After researching, I have come to find out I have been doing this all my life.
I am a 32-year-old mom of 3, and I have a history of childhood trauma and also adulthood trauma. MD honestly kinda helped me out in certain situations. When my life got too bad, I always had my fantasy world I could escape to. Now, it gets to the point, where I do it involuntarily. I even act out my daydreams. A lot of people think I am crazy, but oh well. Glad I finally have a word for it.

Jay's podcasts are really good. I watch them on YouTube for free. Today, I watched his video about motivation. In fact, I've been watching a few videos on this subject. Jay gave us an assignment to complete the following sentence: I am stuck because? I don't describe myself as stuck, but to finish the sentence, I would say that I am stuck because I am tired. Does anyone here have a comfort item you carry with you when you go out? For example this is my doll, Annie, and I've recently been bringing her with me when I run errrands flor have an appointment. Holding her comforts me. I've bought her clothes, crocheted for her, I recently bought a personalized blanket with her name on it. Just wondering if anyone else has a comfort item.

this is the first i've heard of maladaptive daydreaming. i did a mini-surf on it and it sounds allot like what my therapy supporters and i have been calling, "dissociation." i'm not confident i understand maladaptive daydreaming, but i do know my own dissociation has, literally, been a life-saver more than once on my own trail of tears. the downside to this instinctive coping mechanism is that it all too easily becomes a habit that cheats me out of life.
dunno if it's the same phenom or not, but thought i'd share. more importantly, i wanted to welcome you aboard.
yes, having a name for ^it^ can go a long way in healing the hurt behind the phenom. hope healing happens here.
I hadn't heard of maladaptive daydreaming before either. But ithe way it works for you sounds a lot like my experience with numbing. Based on my memories it started with a trauma and after years of more traumas and of no treatment it became something I was good enough at that I started doing it kind of automatically when I was bored, unhappy, anxious etc. Some years ago someone mentioned to me being present in the moment (actually they mentioned it to someone else iny hearing, but I felt like it was directed at me). Over a faw years I've been able to work on increasing that, but it's not easy when I've had quite a few moments (especially when I was younger) that I just couldn't be present in.
Anyway, thanks for the information, and welcome again.
Thank you for reaching out. Ive dealt with a lot dissociation issues throughout my life. You are not alone
Big hugs <3
