Mainstream validates PTSD experience

Often we don't realize that PTSD really isn't just a marginal experience, but is something recognized in mainstream society in great works of art.

I just realized Kurt Vonnegut's novel, Slaughterhouse Five, is not only considered #18 among the century's top #100 novels. It's also a chronicle of the flashbacks the author experienced after being a POW in WWII. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slaughterhouse-Five

There must be many other great works like that, works that validate our experience before the world. Music, paintings, other books...we are not alone...

Anybody want to add to the list? A list for those moments when we feel isolated and alone?

The true story 'A Child called it" by Dave Pelzer was a book with followup books The Lost Boy, A man named Dave. The child abuse he suffered at the hands of his mother was horrendous.

Not a PTSD book, but a book on the personal journey of the Priminister of Canada's wife.
Margaret Trudeau "Changing my Mind" Really enjoying this book and how she endure many mental health issues in the public eye.

I watched Blind Side last night, and it didn't depict the character to have PTSD, but it sure did play some flashbacks.

I knew Margaret Trudeau was hounded by the tabloid press a lot, but I didn't know she was battling mental health issues, too.

Some of those time travel movies seem to be more about how regular memory can work. I was watching one last night. The time traveler arrived at a new point in time, disoriented, seeming deranged. The people he met before he got his bearings thought he was nuts. But really he wasn't deranged at all, if you knew where he was coming from.

Seems similar with our PTSD flashbacks. They make perfect sense if you know where we're coming from. They only look crazy to those who don't know the whole story.

    I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying.  I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there.  I think that I will start writing in it again.  It's so therapeutic.
