Ramble Warning. Perhaps a trigger warning for those among us who are sorting through the painful, long-term whiplash of dysfuctional parenting in your childhood. I am sorting through the treachorous confusion of how far a mentally ill/toxic mother should be involved in the problems of middle aged children, spouses, grandchildren and significant others. I almost envy my peers whose adult children chose estrangement for their personal coping. My middle aged cherubs look to me for solutions far beyond what I can handle. I genuinely want all of them in my life and feel their pain intensely, but the need for reality checks is frequently intense. No Dear, not the sort of checks which will keep your finances afloat for another week or month. The reality checks are of how sustainable our current methods are. Your old mother is drowning along with you. Her swimming strength is not Nature-designed to grow here in her "Golden Years." I doubt geriatric science will ever gain the strength to over-come the natural order of off-spring out-living the parents.
In my own old-mother psychosis, the grandchildren (2 and 5years old) are the toughest thorn in this thorny chew. Their welfare is threatened far enough that Hubs and Child Protective Services felt the need to step in after I distanced myself from the joys of being the Monster-in-Law/Toxic Mother whenever I didn't step up to do things as the reigning parents expected of me. In my psychosis, I believe they mostly repeated the efforts which failed when I tried them on my own, with emotional support from my peer support network. This happened during my 2017 funeral pilgrimage. I prayed and prayed that their combined efforts would be more effective than my isolated Granny efforts, but. . . My grandson started kindergarten this week and. . . Old Gammy is terriffied for her grandchildren. If a grandmother's tears could cure, we'd all be fit and happy this week. As it is. . .
Support needed. . . I feel so helpless. . .

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

Years ago, I won a mirrored armoire from my job. It's in my bedroom but I rarely stand in front of it. Yesterday, I had to have a dexascan done so I had to change into a gown. There was a full length mirror in the changing room. I'm aware that I gained 5 to 7 pounds over the last year from cheating on Keto but I didn't know what it looked like. It was a reality check.
Family situations can be so taxing but I would give anything to have mine back.
I ask only from a place of trying to define my own confusing relationship with my family
That decision and the psychic wounds attached make it an even deeper mystery as to why the middle aged children are still pulling on my proverbial apron string. How to do this multi-generational magic act is an even deeper mystery to me. I have zero role models on this score. It feels far more intimidating than the psycho-politics of being a female engineer.
Without anything old to fall back on, we don't repeat the old patterns, no matter how comfortable they may be
You teach people how to treat you, it's always a crash course for all involved when you start and the reality is some people can't hack it. When they can't hack it you still owe it to yourself to be met with love and acceptance....never treated like a personal loan company. Maybe baby steps is adding the ridiculous interest rates that a real loan company would add and see if they realize their credit score with you doesn't really help them in the real world lol.
Ultimately it's like the Nemo movie...we've all got some sort of disablity to work with and we all have to figure out our own lives.
