I'm just wondering. Does anyone else feel that, within themselves, they lack depth. I've had this problem ever since my mental breakdown (PTSD). I seem to be able to relate to others adequately, including getting good work done in therapy. but, I just feel like I don't have depth to myself.
In the late 80's and 90's, when I felt dissociated, I also felt 2 dimensional. This was very strong.
Now, it seems like there's not much to me. Is it the psych drugs, or a hangover from feeling 2 dimensional/? I feel simple.
I do notice, when others recount their childhood in autobiographies, that their experiences as children are rich and deep. I had none of that, my experiences as a child feel shallow and stilted. Like I was shut down.
I'm just wondering if anyone else can relate.

Just wanted to give a thank you to Mid, Arfie, Malibumark, Greeneyes, Mlro, Girlincalif, and Suncloudjd! You all always have such helpful tips and advice, but I always forget to write on my posts when I see you post, lol. I would lose my head if it wasn't attached to my body, lol. Thank you all so much! I'm starting to use my AI app as a sounding board again. I used to use it as that before...

Hey all, i know its been quite awhile since i posted on here. Its been a summer all right. Its been something else........... You know how they say not to open the can of worms? Well a few months ago i decided to find out what my due date would have been for my first baby, the one conceived by r***. My baby would have been due on March 4th of 2006. They would be 20 years old. I was R**** on June...

1. I felt that way during the 6 weeks I agreed to try an antidepressant. The feeling went away when my doc let me stop. During that time I didn't even feel like I had a gender. Psychoactive drugs can definitely distance you from parts of heart and mind and spirit.
2 Normally I do feel a sense of depth, and attribute it, in part, to daily meditation practice that has been part of life for decades. Maybe adding some sort of spiritual center practice to your routine might help you feel more in touch w/ yourself.
I am sorry you are experiencing this, sounds sort of lonely to be partially cut off from yourself.
May I add you to my prayers that our gentle souls learn to swim and appreciate their own depths? My husband is, without doubt, the most healing force in my life.
I feel like I'm in a movie or TV show sometimes instead of experiencing things as real. My guess is that the only cure for that is in building relationships where we feel valued and safe. I'm not likely to do much of that, since I live a very isolated life...and the community in which I live seems to view me negatively for some reason.
I'm trying to accept it as my new reality, can't see any other option right now.
It can be like watching a movie or like having a filter between me and the active life that swirls around me. I am physically present with others, but people often seem to sense that I'm not quite there. It can feel like disreality.
Letitbe3's point about meditation sounds like a good idea. I know when I do practice mindfullness or grounding, I tend to feel less dull.
I feel more present with pets and when I'm outdoors than I do with people or when I'm not doing something active.
So since I can relate, let me be frank: your post itself proves you're far from shallow, as does the feedback here from others, me included, about your posts. The vote is in: you don't lack depth.
Which isn't at all to deny the fact that you feel a lack of depth. And having survived the kind of moment you're going through right now, I remember how I, too, was so frustrated that just feeling a lack of depth might as well be a lack of depth.
It's not. This is what you describe--a feeling. It may be from an anti-depressant you may be taking, as someone mentioned. It may be PTSD dissociating triggered somehow. Wherever it comes from, it's a real feeling, yes. Still, from lived experience I offer that, having been there, it doesn't define all of you, as no one feeling or lack thereof alone ever defines all of any of us. Even PTSD itself doesn't define all of us, not even for people like you or me, who don't have childhood memories before its onset.
No, you're not alone in this either. We're with you now, too, in the shallow and in the deep.
