So about a week ago the dogs started being really interested in small hidy holes all around the yard. We have been seeing a gray calico cat who has been working on my wild mouse issue - so she has been quite a welcome addition - even if the dogs do chase her.
then three days ago I caught sight of a kitten... We have been trying ever since to get a hold of the kitten and any litter mates. Well, we have not found any litter mates, but daughter walked up and picked up the one we have be seeing. She was dehydrated and was happy for water, but then just laid down in the spare ferret cage. I took her out and washed her rump, she had diarrhea blocking her as well as her female parts being swollen and hard. I have never washed a feral kitten just lay there for a bath.
Granted, I think she is only about four or five weeks old, but I worry. At first I thought it was heat stroke and dehydration.
Later tonight I will offer her some meat or if I can find any canned food. I have ferret kibble in the cage, but I doubt she would know how to eat it.
I have dubbed her Feral. I can't keep her. Hubby is allergic to cats and we have no real plan for the future once I get the house packed. In the morning I will hit up the local cat rescues and find one who will help Feral.

I have spent the last hour and a half using a straw to get tiny bits of gatorade into Feral - who went from barely swallowing, but biting me and fighting hard enough I could not give another dose.
My estimate of age has gone down... I am thinking Feral is closer to 3 to 4 weeks old. Feral is also horribly underweight. Tomorrow I will add canned milk to what I am putting down him/her. Then I will find a rescue who will take over - or I will finish nursing Feral back to health and then find a great home.
At this point I am wondering if the ferrets would allow a cat to live in their cage with them... But hubby is more important than keeping Feral, so I will have to find him a home.
yadlim - who is just dead tired, but Feral is up and walking and exploring his cage!!!!

Horse barns often need barn cats...
They sell Kitten Milk at the grocery store, so that may go down better---and please, take kitten to the nearest shelter. Kittens are readily adoptable, and if the kitten is sick, their vet will know what to do.... Much as I hate giving any animal to a shelter, but in your situation, with Hubby and dogs?
BLessings on you and kitty, sorry to preach, I rescue all the time and have all my life, too, so I wax passionate---I'm currently being sat on by a cat who has outlived all veterinary expectations by a good 5 years, after not quite 7 years with me and 6 years as a real wild feral boy! (Our vet wonders why he is still alive with his issues. We figure because he's not about to give up the good life!)

Hubby got up early this morning an replaced the water in the hot water bottle to help keep Feral warm. Even though it caused him hives, he tucked the kitten into the warm towels to help maintain his body heat...
but in the hour between hubby doing this and my getting up - Feral passed. I took care of the body, tears are for the living so I find I have none. I had a lot last night while I cuddled the dying kitten, but when I went to sleep last night he was up and walking.
The plan was as soon as the cat only rescue an hour drive from here opened so I could call them. I was a bit worried they would give up on Feral and just put him down, so I was only going to turn him over if they were willing to try. If not, I would have picked up kitten formula this morning and an eye dropper... to nurse him back to health before turning him into the shelter. Hubby was even considering how he could let me keep the kitten.
The dogs have stopped searching tiny hidey holes, so I am pretty sure there are no other kittens from this litter.
Maybe if I could break this numbness I could feel for the kitten I held so dearly last night for hours.

Sigh - he brought fleas into the house. I will have to treat the dogs for fleas and worms, just in case. And the ferrets, though they had no contact and the dogs only got to smell the kitten.
I became horribly attached. It is for me that I will cry, once I am no longer numb.
My pain killers have kicked in, I could go lay down and start today over again in a couple hours. That sounds like a good idea.
