Down here in Mexico as with countries in Europe Labor Day is May 1st, not now in September, so I had to remind myself that it's Labor Day weekend in the States.  I hope everybody has a really good holiday, y'all!

my foster kids have the day off for u.s. labor day and i **still** have to remind myself why.

did you know that the 1919 may day riots are the reason why the u.s. refuses to celebrate international labor day. the bill was in congress for the u.s. to join the international celebration when labor protests honoring international labor day erupted in cleveland ohio. the riots rocked the nation and congress voted to celebrate the day in september rather than honoring the may day riots with a national holiday. it was a seriously ugly riot which petered on for months.

No, arfie, I just thought it was like how the USA still measures in yards and inches instead of meters and centimeters, ya know? I didn't know there was a whole history behind it That's heavy--a riot that lasted for months. Whew! I got caught in riots in Uruguay when I was a missionary kid, but none of them lasted more than a day at a time. Still, here I am with PTSD from just those smaller riots, nothing like that one. Yikes!

international worker's day, alongside using the LONG traditional european may day as the day to celebrate it is a u.s. tradition born within the labor union/socialist growth. it honored the haymarket riots in chicago, 1886. those riots were even more violent than the may day riots in cleveland.

another more current tidbit.
the katrina cleanup in new orleans, 2006 attracted a surplus of day laborers from hispanolandia, hanging out on the devastated street corners, waiting for pay day. thousands of them gathered downtown for the traditional may day with speakers declaring their hispanic rights of ownership. the next day the national guard was quietly brought in to monitor the situation before the predominantly african american citizens of new orleans had time to react. it sent racial tensions through the roof for a goodly while.

i've only witnessed riots from a safe social distance of several city blocks. that was frightening enough for my hypervigilant senses.

    Does anyone here have a comfort item you carry with you when you go out? For example this is my doll, Annie, and I've recently been bringing her with me when I run errrands flor have an appointment. Holding her comforts me. I've bought her clothes, crocheted for her, I recently bought a personalized blanket with her name on it.  Just wondering if anyone else has a comfort item.
