It can be rough going at times but, if you have a good therapist and are willing to go through the process, it's worth it. At least it has been, so far, for me.
Hopefully someone can give you an answer regarding the differences between guided imagery and EMDR.
Good luck to you.
There are different kinds...some are used for relaxation, sleeping, decreasing anxiety, weight loss...and more.
Then, there is also the PTSD Trauma Pack. It has in it, Releasing Grief, Dealing with Anger, Dealing with Trauma, Positive Affirmations...and more. I have the PTSD Trauma Pack. Check this site out for it:

Belleruth Naparstek is highly noted in her field of Guided Imagery.
I am also doing hypnosis, which is very similar to Guided Imagery. This is a self-made CD from my therapist. It's hypnosis for self-confidence. It brings you into a very similar state that Guided Imagery brings you to, a peaceful, focused concentration state, but without the imagery.
Will be doing EMDR later, and Thought Field Therapy.
Guided Imagery includes music, and a voice that guides you through the imagery exercise. The releasing grief and healing trauma part are very 'gripping'...I can 'feel' it working, I express tears, and just 'feel' it working in my soul. I know it's doing some healing.
Guided Imagery can be done at home, you can buy it on-line, at www.healthjourneys.com
Guided Imagery is more toward a relaxed, focused concentration state, with a goal...and the goal is the name of the CD....Healing Trauma or Releasing Grief, or Sleep, or just relaxation.
Check out EMDR.com for more info on that technique.
