Great listener! Too intense! Part 2
mujicaptsd
This sequel to the original thread called Great listener! Too intense! is to report what became of your supporting me as a college teacher despite having my boss hang that label on me. I may fail to get tenure in 2 years if that label works against me. But what you said in support of me proved true today.
Being real in class meant that after class today a student revealed to me privately that hes recovering from suffering an episode of mental illness. He visited down by Uruguay when I was back home, too. Which made it easier for him to be comfortable talking about things.
Hell be joining us, Im happy to say.
Thank you all for encouraging me to be real in the classroom. I can support people that way, and spread the support I get from you here.
I hope you get the support you need here like I do.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

I am reminded of how a friend coaxed me into talking epilepsy awareness to some college kids. Most dozed off or texted others. But after, a girl came up and hugged me (this was pre-PTSD etc.) and asked me what to do if ou think you're having seizures. She was terrified of her family's reaction, etc., and I was able to help her figure out what family member she coudl count on, what docs she could consult, etc, by talking to her more in-depth. I've never forgotten that those few words from me helped her get proper medical care for something that scared her---bc she saw that it wasn't the end of the world, by hearing me talk about it.
Sorry, not hijacking, just asying, I get what it's like to feel you've really reached someone and done some good. I admire you tremedously for putting yourself out there:-)
I've experienced negative stigma-based feedback from being too open to some people about my PTSD and have withdrawn in the past because it hurt. I was publicly shamed at another job in a board meeting because I accepted invitations to give talks about my life in recovery. I eventually quit that job, things got so bad. But being on this site has given me the self esteem to try to speak up again for myself and others like us. I would just like to live without living in shame.
Like I said, after self-identifying at work I'm not sure it will be safe on the job for my tenure decision in 2 years. I'm no fool, I'm well aware of the office politics that can hurt me from sticking my neck out. I've been hurt before. But I would regret not speaking out about the good done here at DS PTSD if I got tenure by being silent.
Thanks for your support!
For us to get healthier is a game of inches sometimes, but over time it adds up, and then sometimes we can offer someone else a hand. Hope this student takes the hand offered in help.
If not, I'll remember how all of you, my comrades here, and I do work so hard to be well, and I'll try to keep my focus. Rather tired, hoping for a restful weekend Have the best weekend of the year so far yourselves, my friends.
