Episode Before DInner Guest TW FF
I lived alone and didn't date for 10 years until this year. Now retired in Mexico I've met someone, and I had her and her son over for dinner last night. She's aware of my PTSD from combat and torture when I was a missionary kid in Uruguay, but he was not.
He is now. Something he said triggered me after dinner, and soon I found myself in fight or flight mode getting really defensive and acting like a jerk. I commend him for keeping his cool, and I commend her for understanding afterwards, but I'm as embarrassed as I can be today.
I sent him a WhatsApp apology first thing this morning and he accepted it, but the damage is done. Now it is established in her family what a butthead I can be.
I'd like to crawl in a hole and stay there. I really hate my PTSD right now and how it affects my being around family. In addition to combat and torture, as a missionary kid I survived how my folks acted out when they had PTSD from the war zone we lived in. To act like that, too, disappoints me to the core after all of my PTSD therapy and medication and years of support here on DSPTSD. I wish to God there were a cure for this.

Jay's podcasts are really good. I watch them on YouTube for free. Today, I watched his video about motivation. In fact, I've been watching a few videos on this subject. Jay gave us an assignment to complete the following sentence: I am stuck because? I don't describe myself as stuck, but to finish the sentence, I would say that I am stuck because I am tired. When I have energy, I do...

Does anyone here have a comfort item you carry with you when you go out? For example this is my doll, Annie, and I've recently been bringing her with me when I run errrands flor have an appointment. Holding her comforts me. I've bought her clothes, crocheted for her, I recently bought a personalized blanket with her name on it. Just wondering if anyone else has a comfort item.

Please don't be so hard on yourself.
You are NOTHING like your parents.
I completely understand how PTSD can effect relationships, but it sounds like they are very understanding and care for you...
Just remember,it's the PTSD talking, not your natural and quite wonderful core self.
ya done good, muji, as did the other players in the incident. bonds of trust and understanding have been built on less.

What a great post. Here is what I learned. I had, (past tense) had hundreds of triggers. I shared my triggers with my group of friends and told them, Often, repeatedly over and over, use each of these triggers.
This gave me literally thousands of opportunities, to deal with each trigger, with patience, and peace and self control. Within a few short months, I stopped having episodes like you described. I used to have those so often, it was not just occasionally, it was like dozens of times each day. I was consumed and overwhelmed.
I still have the dozens of triggers others installed within me. I also have many people, including my wife, who pull those triggers regularly and often. Today my wife pulled on one of my triggers, and I responded tenderly with love gentleness and patience. If anything, now when i am triggered, I get quiet, I slow down, I measure what i think and feel, I choose to respond to the person in front of me, and not the abusers in my past.
Perhaps this may give you hope, or some ideas of how to overcome. What an awesome post. You took responsibility, didnt blame others, apologized...dude, you are well on your way, get help from people willing to pull your triggers on purpose, to let you practice over and over and actually CHOOSE your responses. Freedom is a great thing.
It's okay. You have great awareness muji. Feeling like you are being a jerk is not fun. And apologizing profusely probably doesn't make you feel any better because it feels like a catastrophe. I admire your strength, determination and honesty.
So, yes, I understand your pain and frustration. I sincerely hope your lady friend sees you for who you really are. Kind, giving, supportive, loving, intelligent. You have much to offer. Don't forget who you really are and not judged to be. Prayer, hugs, support.
