Fighting with your own thoughts and grinding on stuff stinks. I'm not there at the moment, but I have been.
Because anger is so mobilizing, it's no wonder that it's one of the states that make it hardest to sleep.
Good luck
I was putting groceries in the truck, and the wind was whipping my hair around my face so I couldn't see, and whenever it whipped me in the face I jumped and got even angrier, until I wanted to punch something.
So I cussed out the wind, and passers-by thought I was a lunatic. I'm sure I looked like one.
You are not alone...
Waking in the middle of the night after a few hours of sleep is a specific, sub-category of insomnia. I have been working w/ my own ' fine tuning fix or to at least shorten the time I am awake. I feel like my body is racing inside, more anxiety than anger but perhaps similar physiology to what you are experiencing.
Here is what helps me settle down:
-As soon as I recognize that churning feeling I do not continue just to lay in bed, wheels spinning.
-I get up and eat something (usually warm milk and a couple cookies) - this alone, after about 15 minutes, seems to redirect my physiology and the churning starts to abate.
-Meantime I may watch a little mindless TV, or read something non-intense.
-After about 45 minutes I put myself back to bed and read until I feel drowsy.
The whole cycle takes about an hour. But 1 hour is better than the previous 3 or four of sleep loss. Plus while I am awake my attention is re-directed.
Don't know if this approach will help you, but wanted to share it just in case.
I wake up at usually 3 am. If I cannot sleep. It is very interesting that I wake up around this time. I have in years and years ago in past. This is the time my abuser came in my room. 3 am. on every time .OCD. I have been working on self-love and self-care lately. My anger has dissipated. Thank GOD. I hope you heal. tc.
Do some things that make you feel good about yourself. and SLEEP
You are NOT alone!
Thank you so much. I managed to sleep but I got sicker. Been battling a very nasty cold. So I've been sleeping a lot...
Anyway, thank you. I'll try some of your suggestions if it happens again.
Get well from your cold.
I'm teaching death and dying classes to nursing students right now. It's good to share what I learned from my own ptsd indirectly with them as I teach the class. But we dealt with the anger stage of grief this week. Sometimes that triggers anger in a student in the class, and they want me to deal with it. I'm their instructor, though, and not their therapist.
One of the students got triggered and got angry with me after class, wanting me to deal with it. I was underslept myself. I had another class to teach right then, so I offered to talk later but the student didn't show. I have the class again tomorrow. It would nice to be rested in general, but specifically so I could be ready to deal with that student.
The way I'd like to deal with that student is not to be dealing with her in class, the wrong time and place, and not to be the only one dealing with her anger, either. I mentioned her to my boss at school. A colleague suggested referring her to counseling, which is legitimate but will probably make her more angry at first.
Any suggestions? I'm just trying to get this out right now so I can go back to sleep. Help welcome.
