Adult Ravens Frolic in the Snow
DavidNRockies
I was watching an Animal Planet show about Siberia.
They showed some ravens just being playful in the snow.
But then the narrator said, "Adult ravens seem to lack natural enemies, so they can afford to be playful."
And I started to cry.
Anybody else find that statement as powerful as I did ?
Anybody else have great difficulty tapping into that playful side of themselves ?
Anybody else find it really tough to "have a good belly laugh at least once a day ?"
Yeah. It made me pretty sad......

I think the video is offline at the moment, but it's brief, and just shows two ravens ... frolicking in the snow.

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

First, I hope everyone is doing well, and continuing to fight that good fight! Keep up the great work on yourselves; I'm rooting for all of you!So, I started doing therapy at the beginning of the year, when I was in my most depressed state, but with my therapist, I made big changes and steps in the right direction. But, over a month ago, she couldn't take my insurance anymore, and I had to stop...
I freaked reading that post, David. Not in a bad bad way, just.... I suddenly flashed to the way my sister would have the eye-smirk and .... Yeah. She had no natural predator other than my dad, and they were ravens together....
I am blessed in two things. One is that my mom encouraged me to be an imaginative playful kid whenever it was safe to do so. The other is that I don't care if I am 45, I will giggle and blow bubbles and use play-doh and to he** with it.
It's my victory. I was so worried about it at first, in college, and after, but the people who rolled their eyes at me? Wren't people I really liked hanging around anyway. And the rest? I'm married to one, LOL.
But yes, that idea.... I got a big tear-lump in my chest right away reading that. Let alone finding a video of it.
And I can't belly laugh very often. A short ha-ha, some good ho-hee-hees, but a real belly laugh? No. My hubby can crack up into a big belly laugh a lot more easily than I can.
Someday, hwoever, I'll get there:-) So will you, David. Big purrs to you....
Play is, without a doubt, the best medicine this chronic patient has ever found. These days I consider a reluctance to play a red therapy flag in my personal inventory.
Hope you remember how to play, David. Go stick a spoon to your nose.
It is a very striking statement.
It's notable to me as a community college death and dying teacher living in Maryland, the state where Edgar Allan Poe died, that his poem "The Raven" symbolized death extremely well, but missed this playful side of ravens.
As for my playful side, I still have that little Muji inside me somehow that comes out to play when I play guitar and sing old songs I learned when I was a kid. Songs are time machines for me.
Nowadays, as you know, I am a stand up comedy hound, watching stand up specials on Netflix. I go to see stand up comedians at live comedy clubs, too. By myself, of course, but seeking that "good belly laugh" you mention nonetheless.
In the years of my trauma in that neighborhood from Hell, I often heard the primary sociopath -- asked how he was -- say, "Living the dream !"
I never dream of destroying another's life. I guess some do :-(
@Dooo: may you never lose that "childlike" playful side. May it sustain and rebuild you in your most difficult times. It's truly a gift !
@muji: I'm glad that music and song, and movies and comedians can still tickle your soul. May they always. I also know that the subject you teach is rather heavy, so ... even if you didn't have your particular past ... you'd probably need those respites and refuges more than many.
Thanks for your thoughts, all......
TW....I watched a nature show on PBS, a mother lemur and her babies...I let my guard down it was so nice, and funny too as they jumped from tree to tree....then one of the babies fell and broke their back and the mother had to leave the crying baby, in order to save the rest of the family..this was years ago and I'm crying now as I write this....so much for letting my guard down when I thought it was safe too.......because there are too many natural enemies elsewhere. Thank you for this...it is important to me to find a safe way to feel, to laugh...I can start with the ravens playing in the snow!! Sorry if I got OT
