I've been grieving for the past week over what happened in Los Vegas, and I started to write a poem. Tw maybe???
My relations to shootings.
I've had a relationship I never knew existed. A one sided abusive relationship. At 4am on Monday I woke up like usual. Instinctively I went on my phone and was bombarded with three words "Los Vegas" and "shooting". I instinctively cried. A shooting happened just a few hours befoe I woke. Little did I know it was the largest mass shooting since Pulse, which happened a year prior. One year prior was considered the worse mass shooting. In my life I've lived through way more that what my mother did from my age. Not from as a baby to now, no from when my mother was a baby to my age. To put it into perspective in 2016 there were 139 shootings. One year alone is more shootings I've lived through than my mother. I'm not gonna say I'm a professional, because I'm not. I remember every place I was since 9/11. School shootings were most common. July 20, 2012 a shooting at a midnight premier for The Dark Knight Rises. Wanna know where I was? In a different theater watching a midnight premier of The Dark Knight Rises. Virginia Tech, 2007 I was getting ready to head to school when the deadliest attack of that time struck. After that I knew - seven year old me knew - this was gonna become a regular thing. 2012, Sandy Hook. A man walked into an elementary school and set fire. Our younger brothers and sisters and children killed. At that point I figured the government would finally do something after first graders were running away. But no, absolutely nothing happened. We got angry, said something had to happen and then moved on. But this isn't just an American things. Just this June in Britain I waited for hours knowing my friend was going out on the day of that terrorist attack on the bridge. I knew she was crossing that bridge to get to the café in which she was going to meet her boyfriend. I waited all night for a single phone call from her telling me she was okay. She finally did but her boyfriend was shot. When just a year from that she was waiting for me to call her because I lived near Pulse. We've gotten used to seeing the word shooting. We get mad, we sigh knowing the government isn't doing anything and then we move on hoping this is the last one. While people say those "prayers and love to the victims" thats just shallow words to say when you don't know what to say. We all know those prayers are kind and all but that's not doing anything. Los Vegas showed us just how deadly man is.
I'm not sure how to end it. I'm thinking of just ending it there because there's gonna be another shooting that I'll be able to add. And that's shitty to say but it's the truth.

Side note if possible try to donate blood if your in that vicinity. I believe they're still looking for donars and that's something good you can do.
Whenever there is a mass shooting I remember how my own PTSD journey began. I just wrote about it elsewhere here today that it was after surviving a couple of homicide attempts, times someone tried to kill me in a war zone where I was a missionary kid. In my case the bomb didn't catch the car's gas tank on fire and the gun to my head jammed when the trigger was pulled--twice. But when I was 10 I did get caught in the midst of a riot where I turned and saw a college student get shot by riot police and die behind me.
He wasn't so lucky, and somehow I was. Survivor guilt, then, has been an issue for me because I literally saw with my own eyes how random the difference between a bullet here and a bullet there was. I imagine lots of the Vegas survivors will struggle the same way, too.
As I also wrote elsewhere here today, given miracles like that, I felt it mattered to make a second chance at life work out. It's always a humble process daily for me, up for daily discussion, which is why I need to come here every day.
