I feel too despicable for words.
I have two dogs. Technically only one, but one of my son's dogs has been with me so long he might bite my son if he tried to take him back. This dog is very old and nearing death. Every day is a bit of a struggle for him. My other dog is around 18 months, adopted from the pound almost 11 months ago. She was responding well to training until recently.
Two ex-gf dogs have been dumped on me by my son off and on since the gf left the state 2 years ago. They became my problem when my son left the state. A home was found for one of them. I ended up having to take the other dog to the pound and was made to feel like a pile of crap for not taking ownership.
Am I too despicable for words?
I feel like an old dying dog and a young dog in need of training are enough. The old dog is a champ. I had delusions of his mentoring the young dog...
God, it hurts.

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

First, I hope everyone is doing well, and continuing to fight that good fight! Keep up the great work on yourselves; I'm rooting for all of you!So, I started doing therapy at the beginning of the year, when I was in my most depressed state, but with my therapist, I made big changes and steps in the right direction. But, over a month ago, she couldn't take my insurance anymore, and I had to stop...
I would probably mail it back to him.... but that's just me. My only pet at present is a large pet rock (very low maintenance, no training needed.)
So sorry, I ban you from labeling yourself despicable. Label would only apply if they were really your dogs. You are not mother of all dogs.
Am sorry about your ancient doggie, too bad about the dog years thing.
If your son is old enough to have ex gfs who he let give him their dogs, and old enough to move out of state, but didn't deal w/ his responsibility about said dogs. No arfie, the court of letitbe3 finds you innocent.
Sigh. I guess some things SHOULD be hard.
No, you're not despicable. Some people are just nuts.
I had no choice at that point and took Louie to the local pound. I felt incredibly upset. I'd never given a dog up before and to take Louie to a shelter when he'd grown up in one was traumatizing to me. I felt so guilty and sad and every other emotion out there. I was in tears at the shelter when I was leaving. I was sure he wouldn't understand why I'd left him there and feel abandoned and everything.
I called the shelter to check on Louie frequently and everyone had fallen in love with him and he was staying out by the front desk. Next I heard that one of the shelter workers had started taking him home daily and would only bring him to the shelter if people made appointments to see him. She actually had turned down some people she thought wouldn't be right. This made me feel so much better, knowing he was not in a cage and that the woman was being choosy about who Louie would live with. Finally I heard he'd been adopted. I ran across the woman at a dog event a few months later and asked if she had heard anything. The woman who took him had been taking him for car rides and cuddling up with him and taking him for walks and all. It was such a relief to know that he had adjusted to a new home. I still miss Louie terribly. I had him for 6 years and tried to make it work with him and my cats. But I know he is in a good home.
You cannot save every animal and it is terrible that your son expected you to take on dogs he was responsible for. You have two of your own dogs to care for and you did the right thing. Hopefully the dogs you took to the shelter had the same experience as my Louie and ended up in good homes and are being well cared for by people who actually want them, rather than your son who evidently didn't care. I don't think you are dispicable at all and if your son gave you a hard time about it then he was out of line. If he didn't want the dogs going t6o the shelter then he should have been responsible enough to care for his own dogs or make other arrangements for them. He now has no right to say anything. He put you in a situation you could not handle and you did right by those dogs. The shelter will do their best to find the dogs homes. Even kill shelters try to get the pets adopted. Please don't be so hard on yourself.
I was awful on myself for a very long time, but Louie was my own dog who I'd had all his life except when he was at the shelter. I still wish I could have kept him, but I had another cat and I couldn't take the chance of Louie killing that cat too. You have given those dogs the best chance to end up in homes that want them.
It's hard, but that does not mean it was the wrong decision. You could have done a LOT worse (let me count the ways - let it starve to death, let it run lose until it was killed or taken into the pound in a terrifying way, fond a questionable home where it wouldn't have been well taken care of, etc). Hopefully a good home will be found for the dog, and if not, it'll have a humane death. And that's okay.
Your best is good enough.
