The story is long...and sad. It has continued for years, and although I'm not in the middle of it anymore, I still care about my dear friend who has ptsd. And so I wonder, what is the best thing I can do for him? How can I support him?
Any advice?

I think a person who helps me is a person who is not emotionally attached to my responses, triggers, or emotions. But at the same time, they can empathize with my pain and struggle. They are there when i need them and they do not expect me to be a perfect friend or person. Expectations ruin relationships, esp when it comes to people who are battling ptsd. If your friend has misdirected anger, or sadness, don't judge him and react with the same anger, try and deactivate him by simply being there, listening with compassion. That is so powerful because most people walk away from us because we don't conform to what society says is appropriate social behavior. Well, society doesn't take into account people who have been harmed. So, just be there for him and someday, he will be there for you.

Thank you for your response. I TRULY appreciate it. Especially the part about expectations ruining relationships esp when it comes to those suffering from ptsd. It explains a lot.

Educate yourself and be supportive. Know that there are times when emotions are going to run wild, tears will be shed, anger will erupt but most of all, underneath all of that is someone who has been hurt really badly and needs time/help to heal and move forward (if they do at all). Know that no you can't cure him or take away his pain, just as you can't make him shake it off or force him to get help/move beyond his own boundaries before he is ready. PTSD is tough, not only on the person who has it, but everyone around them too. Good luck and best wishes. You are good friend.
