Hi. I'm new here and unsure if I have PTSD or not. 3 therapists have diagnosed me with it but I always mistrust them because I never feel as if I have suffered enough to have this diagnosis. I have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. I've been raped a few times. I do have bad dreams frequently about being sexually abused but short of that I don't feel like I think about the past much. In fact I don't remember most of my past. I am struggling currently with severe anxiety, an eating disorder and substance use. I isolate a lot and I feel extremely uncomfortable in relationships or around anyone really. I just want to be alone in my room. I feel as though I have nothing to live for except I have a daughter who is really the only relationship I engage in. I feel extremely guilty because I am hiding my drinking from her. I wait until she goes to bed, or sometimes I hide it when she is awake, but I've been drinking every night for several months now. I want to be a better mom and stop drinking but I go from one addiction to another and feel like its the only thing that helps me feel ok. I know no one on here can tell me for sure if I could have PTSD, but can anyone relate? I feel lost and don't know what to do.

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

First, I hope everyone is doing well, and continuing to fight that good fight! Keep up the great work on yourselves; I'm rooting for all of you!So, I started doing therapy at the beginning of the year, when I was in my most depressed state, but with my therapist, I made big changes and steps in the right direction. But, over a month ago, she couldn't take my insurance anymore, and I had to stop...
Nightmares are a direct symptom, anxiety, eating disorders, and drinking problems are also generally associated with PTSD.
The eating disorder and drinking is what you to to cope with the PTSD, though both of those do not work so well.
It be a confusing ride, eshaw, but you are not alone. Welcome to the forum. May you find healing companionship for the ride here. Gentle support while you sort.

Even though you say you do not think about the past very much does not mean that it does not affect you - as can be seen by all the symptoms you describe. I was sexually abused from 8-12 and by the time I was 13 I had blocked it all out. I blocked it out for 30+ years and it still affected me daily with anxiety, panic attacks and with strange and uncomfortable images that would float into my mind that I could never understand. So you don't have to be consciously aware of what happened for it to affect you.
When I was raped at 24 I did everything I could to deny it happened. A few years after it happened I finally told my Dr. about it and she said the word I had been denying all along - rape. I still didn't believe her though because I didn't want to believe her. When I switched Dr's the new Dr. said the same thing "you were raped". It was a few years later and this time...I believed it. Denial is something we do to protect ourselves from the horrors of what happened. It keeps us safe for a while but we can only deny the truth temporarily.
Minimizing your trauma is also a form of denial. It's a way to keep it 'away' so you don't have to look at it. It keeps you safe. But I can promise you that you if do accept your past for what it is and accept the diagnosis of PTSD you can begin to heal from your past. But you must first accept it. When I was having trouble accepting my past as the truth I would repeat it to myself over and over until I did accept it. So I would, in my mind, say "I was sexually abused. This is my truth". It is only once you move into acceptance that you can finally heal. And you deserve to heal from your past so that you can have a wonderful future.
Take care
As my therapist says, the requirement for having PTSD is to have TRAUMA.
You're not alone. (Like Arfie, I had blocked out or rearranged chunks of my childhood to survive it---as an adult, it came back. Ugh.)
Gentle support on the journey. It's tough but you are not alone.
Be easy on yourself.... {Hugs}
I tell her that I don't hate my siblings but I do hate the fact the when she talks on the phone with them, she'll get off crying. It hurts me so much because after the conversation, she'll begin to cry, say things about her kids hating her, think that I'm going side with them but it's not true.
I have a brother who spoke with my mom two weeks ago. He was so darn rude her. He hung up on her, she tried to call him back and he would not answer his phone. This is bothering me because he is extremely mad at me, I don't know why. His daughter is talking about coming out here and kick my butt. It's horrible.
I'm worried because with all of this stress, it's making my mom ill physically. This past Monday, when mom went to see her doctor, she told the doctor how she feels at a certain time in the morning, like at 3:00 am. The doctor said it sound like hypoglycemia. Mom had that back in the 1970s when I was a child, I'm 45 now. When she is calm down, she doesn't have any problems at all.
I'm sorry for going all over the place. I just know the hurt even if it's me. Also I hate when the person is upset because it makes you feel that they are mad at you because they won't talk with you or they express their anger.
I downplayed rapes as just bad events as well as my difficult childhood. Substance issues, mood issues, great love for my child and soo trying to be a good mum, too. You're not at all alone with your difficulties, symptoms, and self doubts. Not at all! There isn't a test for ptsd, but even if the dx ultimately does not fit, you're welcome to hNg around here--we all have experienced trauma. Welcome and gentle hugs xx
I do think that you might have PTSD. Maybe seeing a therapist could help you determine that.
