Interesting that he gave you an either/or scenario for treatment. i've been put on Yaz AND Metformin (I guess it's a popular combo for doctors to prescribe). I need to be on BCP because i'm in a long-term relationship; otherwise I what I gather is that I would have just been put on Metformin. I haven't started Met but plan on doing so starting next week based on pending bloodwork. I've been on Yaz for a month now, and the only weird-ass side effect is that I had a bout of terrible large-muscle group cramping in both of my quads when I was playing soccer - apparently Yaz messes with your potassium levels. Other than that my skin is nice, I can't tell if it's done anything different for hair growth since I've been on BCP for the last 8 years or so, and it doesn't seem to have any bad effects on mood. I'll let you know how it goes with the Met, I am pretty much dreading the first few months based on everyone's horror stories about barfing and diarrhea.

I also agree that it is odd for your dr to give you a choice. My doc put me on both metformin and birth control when I first found out(I'm off bc now so I can get pregnant..). The metformin was prescribed to help stablize my insulin(which helps stablize other hormones)and bc to help me have a period. Once I have a baby she wants me on both again.

I appreciate your input. I have 2 kids (and from what I have been reading, feel pretty blessed by that before having this trouble) both by C-section so knowing that we were done at 2 had my tubes tied during the last one. Maybe that makes a difference? I am keeping a list of all my questions for when I call them back on Monday since this was dropped on me at the end of the day before a holiday weekend. hey, i've been on metformin for 5 years and i was on yaz for about a year during that. i took both together because mine was so bad and it had already caused insulin resistance. the yaz didn't work for me. they had to put me on a much higher estrogen level birth control.

my doct on put me on metformin, because of religous reasons, but I had the choice topo

WOW! i am ignorant to the whole yaz and metformin thingy. my doc has me on metformin and i do the nuva ring. but no more due to my being seperated. i do not see any reason put extra chemicals into my body but i do have a very heavy cycle. please bring me up to date on this issue and things i need to knwo and ask my dr.

OK, talked to the Gyno today and asked why I wasn't on both Metformin and Yaz - the answer (and keep in mind I LOVE my doc, she saved me after my first was born): Yaz would prevent me from getting pregnant. OH! I thought that was why I had my tubes tied! ;) Once they pulled all of that into the equation they decided that it neede to be both. So, I started up today, I'm just sick of pills - oh, well. They are there for a reason.

Yeah. Pills suck. But the way I keep myself from getting down about it and feeling like an old person is that they're basically just vitamins to keep me healthy. They're vitamins!! Happy happy vitamins.
