I was just prescribed Loestrin 1/20 for my PCOS my NP. She had said when I first met her that she planned to put me on Yaz and my endo also mentioned Yaz. So I was surprised when she put me on Loestrin. I went on the internet to look it up and saw a lot of people saying that Loestrin was more likely than other pills to make you gain weight and increase facial hair growth, acne, and scalp hair loss. This really disturbs me as PCOS is the reason why I am overweight and have facial hair now. Luckily I don't deal with acne or scalp hair loss, but I definitely don't want to add those to my list of PCOS symptoms.
So has anyone been on Loestrin to help treat their PCOS. And if so, did they help or hurt? Thanks.

YES YES YES! I was put on Loestrin 24 after not having a period for 5 months and Provera didn't work. I took it for one month and it made me have two periods in one month....then once I stopped taking them is when my other symptoms started to appear...all that you just said. Are you taking BC to treat your PCOS or are you using it for a contraceptive??? Cause if your just wanting to treat your PCOS, there are other options than BC!!! BC actually covers up your symptoms temporarily, but after you stop taking it, they come back the same or worse. So BC is just acting as a contraceptive...and is doing nothing for your hormone imbalances. Us women don't ovulate most of the time anyways with PCOS, and BC is just suppressing ovulation, thus causing more and more cysts in the ovaries. I helped my PCOS greatly with the use of natural herbs ( vitex, saw palmetto, multi vitamin, milk thistle ) and if you have insulin resistance ( gymnema sylvestre ). They are cheap and most have no known side effects. I started herbs after I got off BC to help balance my hormones. It takes a few months to start working...but once it does...you will see and feel a difference. I actually managed to get pregnant after six months but unfortunately, I miscarried. I don't know if it had to do with PCOS or not. But it's something to really look into! Good luck with everything!

that's very interesting jalifilo91. I never thought about it that way, but it makes sense. Do you know if any of those herbs you mentioned help with the facial hair growth?

Facial hair is caused by excess testosterone. Saw Palmetto is the best herb to reduce the hormone. Saw Palmetto is an herb used for male prostate health. Men have prostate problems usually because of excess testosterone. So the herb helps with that. Your body may be producing too much testosterone from being overweight, diabetic, or stressed. I noticed my hair grew alot faster when I was stressed because your body copes with stress by producing the hormone cortisol, but if you remain stressed and your body can't produce enough cortisol to battle it out, then it starts producing androgens to make up for the lack of cortisol. Androgens are also male hormones. Vitex helps with the balance of hormones, such as LH to FSH ratio, estrogen and progesterone. It also helps to induce ovulation. A multi vitamin is always needed no matter how healthy you are. Some women with PCOS have mineral deficiencies and need supplements of zinc, magnesium, vitamin B, K...etc. and a multi vitamin can provide you will all of that. One with folic acid is recommended if you are TTC to prevent the risk of birth defects. And milk thistle is just a liver tonic. Some women with PCOS have excess hormones in their body because the liver isn't working properly and isn't disposing of the unnecessary hormones like it should be. And that herb is great for cleaning it out. And gymnema sylvestre is the "herb form" of the medicine Metformin. Gymnema sylvestre is an herb from India and it means "Sugar Destroyer" and it helps with insulin resistance and diabetes. Hope this information helps!
