BIG study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine (Feb 8th Issue) has some interesting findings:
1) 626 infertile women with PCOS were randomly assigned to receive either Clomid, Metformin extended release, or both Clomid and Metformin for up to 6 months
(Medication was discontinued when pregnancy was confirmed)
2) Conception, pregnancy, and live birth were significantly more likely to occur after treatment with clomid alone that after metformin alone (and no significant benefit was seen with using both together)
3) People were followed UP to 30 weeks and rates of live birth were 22.5% with clomid alone, 7.2% metformin alone and 26.8% combination group
OTHER INTERESTING FINDINGS IN THE STUDY:
4) While the metformin group DID have a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) after treatment and better insulin sensitivity this didnt translate into higher pregnancy rates.
5) Independent of treatment (clomid or metformin) subjects with a BMI < 30 had a significantly higher live birth rate than those with a BMI >30.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? In addition to metformin which is the most extensively studied med in PCOS the Glitazones (Avandia, Actos) are starting to look promising for BOTH prevention of TYPE II DM in patients with PCOS AND restoration of ovulation.

If it can help me lose some more weight (I've lost 5lbs this month on my own), I will feel better and hopefully have a better chance of conceiving.
Also, in other posts, women were saying they lost more weight with metformin.
