Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
Looking thru my paperwork I found this page I printed from my neph's website about "metaboli acidosis as a result of a reduced ability to eliminate the hydrogen waste of protein."
Symptoms: headache, lack of energy, sleepiness, rapid, shallow breathing, nausea & vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, loss of appetitte, fruity smelling breath, disorientation, loss of consciousness
Treatment begins with sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate.
My CO2 is 30, it's been above 22 since December and I have all the syptoms except I haven't passed out - thought I was a couple times.
I can't get into the neph until 6/24 again, the neph I saw 5/7 didn't have my Feb and March labs and since it was the first visit just told me I had PKD talked about eGFR and creatinine, how my kidneys may or may not fail, but didn't look at the other numbers. Fortunately I am scheduled with a different doctor.
Is this something that needs attending immediately, do I need to get pushy with my neph and insist on treatment?
Would appreciate hearing of anyone's experience with this.

The Co2 thing will make you tired, and all the other things, but it really does have a relatively easy fix. The Sodium bicarbonate really does work. I am currently on tablets, and take 2-65mg tablets 3x/day. It really helps..... my level was at 14 on May 6th and since starting these pills, in just over 2 weeks my Co2 number is now at 19 and I am starting to feel better. I did experience some bloating and gassiness with the Sodium Bicarbonate, but I will take it, as I feel so much better now! Good Luck!
