Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
. The only healthy one of my sisters always said she would be tested but I refused to accept a live donor at that time (this was March 2012). I felt PKD was my lot in life and as I have bipolar and lived with that sister at the time, I felt I would always be under scrutiny in how I behaved or ate or drank. She was very good to me and looked after my best interests but I thought she would really be onto me if I had her kidney.
I'm 47, divorced, raised 4 children and have 3 grandchildren. I am looking forward to the next part of my life but was hoping it would include me being able to work (currently on disability) and lots of overseas travel.
However the best chance of being able to do all that is if I have a live donor transplant.
Should I ask my sister if she would still consider being tested?

however, being on dialysis doesn't mean the end of your life, there are a whole lot of options, including travel, that can be arranged by a social worker. I traveled, rode a motorcycle, visited people out of town, went to parties etc. while on dialysis.
having a transplant doesn't totally free your life, you still have medications that MUST be taken to prevent rejection, you must care for your new kidney as if you were carrying a baby, it is very precious.
