Physical & Emotional Abuse Support Group
Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
Was he abusive? Why do I feel guilty?

Before engagement he was my best friend. Charming. Funny. Extremely caring. I could confide in him, trust him. He was the "calling you in the middle of the night to make sure you're okay" when I mentioned I had a bad day kind of guy.
It changed after engagement though. He started getting picky about my dress, my fingernails, and said I needed to go to a salon because I have "raw beauty that hasn't been chisled yet."
I know it seems weird and I don't know why but I keep blaming myself...was I immature?
I come from a conservative family and he would constantly manipulate me to say things to him and say hes afraid of my religiosity. He said it will break the family and take attention away from him and our future kids. I assured him this wasn't the case, family is first for me. He used religion for his advantage when he wanted tho, and make me feel very guilty.
Once he was talking sexually and I said I wasn't comfortable with that and he said I was "mentally immature for marriage" and "he's afraid to have children with me" and "I need to "grow up" because this was the real deal, and would often make me kiss him on the phone. When I wouldn't, he said he's going to a strip club to call all the girls there my name until I was his, and would constantly joke and say he was interested in marrying my friends--he was always trying to make me jealous. Mind games.
I started taking some religious classes which he despised. To prove I'm not stubborn and too rigid he said I needed to promise not to take any classes and go to hooka bars with him otherwise he was going to break the engagement. And he would say "Why can't you do this for me? I can't believe you're going to make me break this because you don't want to go to stupid hooka for me. Are you that selfish?" Families were involved, I felt trapped, so I agreed.
He hated my honesty. Once he asked me if I was attracted to him. I said of course, I was marrying him! He said "Do you want me to lose weight?" I said "I am very very attracted to you and weight is something that fluctuates. I need to lose weight too so maybe we can work out together!" He got upset at me, and sulked, even though I tried very hard to emphasize I am very attracted to him. And turned it around and said, "I can't believe you called me fat." I never did. He made me feel like the devil, though he would always call me short and I'd laugh it off. He couldn't ever laugh at himself. Ever.
Another time he showed me a pic of an engagement dress his family picked out and asked my opinion. I said it was very pretty to be nice, but he kept insisting if it was my taste and I said it wasn't what I was used to but I'd love to wear it and he got mad and said "Jeez. You don't like anything our family likes. Well I don't like your taste." I don't know why or how he came to that conclusion and I told him that was rude and didn't talk to him until he called to yell at me for ignoring him, calling me immature, arrogant, I can't see past my own nose, stupid, crazy, comparing me to his 2 year old niece, I can take my ego elsewhere he'd find someone else to love. He was upset I was on Facebook earlier that day, and said "You look like a mental case in your new profile picture. You know I liked the other one better. But do what you want." I tried explaining my side, how it was unfair for him to disrespect my taste and he said "Stop getting emotional. Jeez...you're so sensitive! Did I hit you for you to be this sensitive?" I was in Canada at the time visiting family and so he said, "The cold is making you crazy. You think I'm going to let you visit Canada anymore? Yeah right! You're surrounded by too much family...you've forgotten who you are." And then "you can wipe your butt with the cloth I don't care!" And then he called back and said "Don't make me yell at you. Don't make me embarrass myself. I love you. Put water on the fire instead of defending yourself. Promise you won't leave me, my love?"
He controlled the finances too and would always be picky about what I wore--he wanted me to wear tighter clothes and more make up. Once he said "I want to show you off to the world"
When I broke and told my mom, my family decided to end it. He cried saying I broke his trust and I should've talked to him, and that I threw his love away. I feel guilty. So so guilty. Did I do the right thing? Was this abuse, or just his frustration/sensitivity/him getting emotional? Was I unjust?

Maybe it is easier to see in the lives of others. This sounds like he wants to control everything and like he desires to make you feel badly about yourself.
i just had an internet convo with my abuser. I asked about his family and he said something to cut me to the quick.
I ended the conversation immediately and then wonder why I brought that on myself.
I am sorry that important people in both your life and mine don't uphold and strengthen us, rather wish to tear us down.
Maybe when we ask ourselves if some behavior or incident is abuse, maybe the only answer is to ask further... am I loved and upheld? I think maybe an argument between equals does not descend in to mean spirited criticism and endless blame, efforts at control....like you , I have questions.
I am sorry, he sounds like he is very hurtful at times.
. But I'm the one who feels guilty and sad...and I even miss him :(
Nonetheless, part of my heartsick feeling right now is due to a sense of guilt as well as my own hurt feelings.
My only thought is this may be a signal of low self esteem, needing to please others, feeling "wrong" when we stand up for ourselves...?
At 62, I sometimes get the feeling that I will find some answers that may enable me to live more happily FINALLY) just about the time i am buried. My dark sense of humor enables me to find that funny in a way.
You can do better than him, and you would naturally agree?
I will heal soon though, and thank you guys again.
This is the key of it, iMHO~ "I think it was easier to take the entire blame of the relationship because then I could fix it. It took a long time for me to realize that I couldn't fix him."
TH~ Be so very thankful for your family. They may have saved your life, getting you away from this abusive man. For sure they saved your sanity. You are very blessed to have folks who REALLY care about you looking out for your well being.
You're "Christian". You must know that Satan sends temptations to try to get you off track. Protect yourself from these types, eh? You are worth so much more than you think you are. :)

I didn't take an overdose one night, but I took a lot of an over-the-counter sleeping /cold and flu aid which was different from the one in the USA. The UK version has paracetamol which can be fatal in large doses. I was taken to the emergency room with my ex. I had the cutest red haired doctor who was so caring. He asked to speak to me without my ex. He asked me if I was ok with him and said that he felt that he was hurting me somehow. I told him he wasn't and that I was fine. Well I can't remember everything I said really. But I know I told him that he was wrong and that I was fine with him.
Now that I have been out of this relationship for years, have been through therapy, been in here I just see it more and more how he was controlling me and manipulating and i have no guilt at all! That does change when you get and stay away from it!
My family on the other hand, I do still have guilt! But it's definitely much better now.
I am sending you healing thoughts and prayers :)
What happened was I started going to a life coach instead of therapy as I thought I wanted to be proactive about things. I started my music again, reaching out, forming new connections, etc. instead of having no friends, no life, nothing outside of him! It wasn't long after I started getting things going in my life that I started to feel happy again. I wanted to have both my domestic life with him as well as my own interests. But of course, this did not agree with him at all. He almost immediately started an affair and wanted a separation. He told me he was staying with a friend of his, but he was actually living with her. However, he was coming back to me all the time and almost immediately wanting to get back together. Eventually I let him come back, then she called me as he was on his way back and told me what was happening. I gave him another chance but as soon as I went out with my friends one night (who had been there for me for 6 months when he was not) he was straight back on with the other woman.
My friend, who he knew was super straight and good two shoes told him that it was healthy for me to be able to see my friends once a week. He said, "No it isn't. She will eventually find someone else if she does that!"
Then he turned into the nastiest piece of work I had ever seen! So basically all of his covert ways became very overt! I couldn't believe I had doubted myself for so long when this all came out. It suddenly became very obvious. Then I was kicking myself wondering why I had put up with it for so long!!! Maybe that's the point we have to get to sometimes to be able to see things. But you know what? It would have been a lot less painful if I wouldn't have had to get to that point! I hope you get out before more damage is done! I highly recommend it!
Happy Easter!

My ex-fianc said he wanted to "make me shine" and make me incredibly involved but now that I think of it, it was all under his umbrella, under his wing--activities he was involved in so we would be together all the time. And if I wanted to do something on my own he wanted to come with me...I didn't see it as a red flag, I just saw it as care/love.
And once he did ask me, "how do I know you won't get attached to someone else?" And even said, while being engaged, "If you cheat on me I'm going to send you back to your mama's house." Just randomly.
I guess the healing part is just that he was this great guy, my best friend, and I saw these subtle changes in him in just a month into engagement.
Thank you lleneW. I am out of it now, just was very hard not to feel guilty. This was all the worst of him, his golden qualities were pure golden and these qualities were the worst. When it ended he guilt tripped me again and said "If you just talked to me about your feelings we could have made it work. But you broke my heart, and hurt my family." :(
Sometimes I think I am strong, but I also know how challenging this has been to recover and how 10 years later I still have not been in a serious relationship with anyone else in spite of perhaps way too many suitors. I was seriously traumatised and I thank God all the time for my music which has given me so many blessings in my life. You are doing the right thing and the fact that he is trying to make you feel guilty is just another tactic! If this man was right for you, you would not feel guilt -- you would feel sure that you wanted him back and that he was wonderful! Sending you lots of healing thoughts. I'm proud of you for not having to let things develop or get worse for you to get out of there!! Pat yourself on the back because you are a smart and intuitive person!!
Your ex did not deserve you. People who take advantage of soft hearts, of people who still saw good and tried making excuses, are people we should hope and pray not to cross paths with again.
I hope you will find a man who will truly cherish you, who will not only heal your wounds but will show you pure and unadulterated love. Not some distorted psychpathic distortion.
I am healing of pain/deception that I dealt with just for being exposed to his verbal/emotional abuse for a month. He is very well-praised and respected in the community so dealing with people's judgements is difficult too.
I cannot imagine your battle. But I know we are only tested by how much we can bear, which says a lot about you and your unwavering soul.
Stay strong.
