Physical & Emotional Abuse Support Group
Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
My H left me for someone else and the worrying thing is it was only once he had gone and I came here that I realised I had been abused. I never saw his behaviour as abusive he was a very skillful manipulator as most abusers are. I studied law at university and wrote a thesis on battered woman syndrome yet I never in my wildest dreams thought I myself could be a victim of abuse, you will have your work cut out convincing your sister to leave. We always think tomorrow will be a better day, sometimes it is but its just another "honeymoon period" I blamed myself and occasionally still wonder what I could have done differently and if it really was all my fault like he said it was : (
I would suggest getting your sister to read as many online articles and books about abusers and the tactics they employ. If she identifies with other victims and their stories, this is a good first step to accepting the relationship is abusive and moving towards leaving. It's never easy leaving (I tried and failed), remember her abuser has probably made her feel totally dependant on him in the way a child depends on their parents!!
