Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
My sister said her neighbor was murdered last night in her bed. The ex boyfriend has been arrested.
Part of me feels like I shouldn't even post this here, that I might be scaring the pants of some people. Part of me feels like many should be way more scared than they are. It's so horrible and tragic. It just made me think about how safety is the most important thing and we don't think about it nearly enough when dealing with leaving a volatile relationship. We like to think things like this can't happen to us. It's just something on TV, something that happens to other people. I know from personal, tragic experience, you can't always anticipate what someone is capable of doing, even if they haven't been physical with you in the past. Please, anyone reading this who is planning on leaving, think about your safety in every decision you make! Please don't underestimate the potential for violence! Get a woman's shelter or authorities involved and stay safe!

In every case I have read or heard about where the abuser killed his spouse/gf/SO and or kids, everyone the knew him said they were shocked because he was such a nice person. In many cases the victim never pressed charges prior to their death.
Unfortunately, many of those being abused don't think it will happen to them because they just don't want to and/or they don't understand that abuse escalates over time and even ONE time, just once of someone putting their hand on another person w/o their permission IS abuse. Even threatening someone is abuse.

My boyfriend was stabbed by a family member. We do not have a high risk lifestyle or live in a dangerous area-we are the most average, middle class couple you can imagine. These things do not just happen to people with substance abuse problems, or criminals, or in high crime areas, they happen because of the kinds of people who are capable of such acts are out there walking around in the world and going undetected-and they come in all types and exist in many groups and demographics. We never would have though my boyfriend's nephew could have tried to kill anyone (and this was a premeditated act with deadly intent), we never did anything to deserve it and even thought we were on good terms.
We know abusers are sick, and damaged, and capable of great harm-never think that it can't become deadly and it can't happen to you! There are people who are missed every day by loved ones, who thought it couldn't happen to them until it did.

I've lived in Connecticut
since I was seven. I
consider Connecticut
my home. On a December
day, a few weeks before
Christmas, not twenty
miles from where I live,
a classroom of six
year-old angels were
mowed down, like
fish in a barrel.
These are all
tragedies that
are not related
to earthquakes,
fires or floods.
These are
HUMAN tragedies.
When we're in the midst
of dealing with situations
related to human DYSFUNCTION,
please practice EVERY OPTION
of self-PROTECTION and VIGILENCE.
