Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
Just venting, please excuse me for having a bitch session but I am so over it ....
We have been building a Chook house as a family project. Every weekend, myself and the 3 kids get out there and work hard helping my H as he builds. It is like torture camp for me. If we do something wrong, don't understand his instructions or are too slow, we get snapped at or talked to like we are idiots. He makes comments like ' I've never seen such a bunch of uncoordinated people' or just exasperated sighs at our 'incompetence'. It's not fun, we all hate working with him. Why can't he see? He works with people all the time, overseeing major civil construction works. I'm sure he doesn't speak to his workers like he does to us. I just don't get it , why would you expect people to like you or enjoy being with you when you make them feel like rubbish?
I am starting to stand up for myself and throw it back in his face at times but I am so angry I could slap him (I wouldn't really, just feel like it...)

Sorry he's doing this to you, and to your kids. Think about the effect this is having on your kids. It's a torture camp for you ... they are learning that this is acceptable behaviour.
Yes, mine has also yelled, cursed, grown impatient, etc. when we are doing projects. "Do what I think, not what I say!" Huh?
Honestly, they're trying to cover their own flaws, lack of esteem. I don't engage in projects (or activities, conversation) with mine unless absolutely necessary.
Maybe reinforce to your kids that nobody's an idiot, the effort matter. Really concerned about the effect upon them...
