Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
I know this is a bit silly, but I've thought of it before and it just happened to come up today. I thought it might be interesting and I was curious if anyone else has any experiences that resemble this.
When my ex moved in with me and we were still finding out all the awesome ways we "fit together so well," I showed him a movie I thought for sure he'd love. He was a pretty bright guy and often found interest in documentaries that uncovered scandals and enjoyed fictional movies with unique plot twists. So I introduced him to Momento.
For those of you that haven't seen it, I won't give anything away, though I'd highly recommend looking into it and watching it if you're into mystery thrillers. I will warn you however that there's quite a bit of manipulation in the movie, so if that's a trigger for you, maybe just keep the movie in mind for another day.
Anyway, after the movie ended, I just stared at him all expectantly with that "wasn't that AWESOME?" look on my face because it fit right in with his interests at that time. But he just looked confused, like the movie didn't make any sense at all and was a total waste of time. I tried coaxing him into deeper conversation about it, because that's something we did back then, and he just wasn't getting it. It felt at the time as if he was trying not to like it because I felt so incredibly accomplished to show him something that I thought he'd love. Though he did tell me he might have to try watching it again sometime.
But then when I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on with my ex over a year later, as it was gradually becoming clear to me that something wasn't in line with what might be considered a healthy view of the world, this movie came to mind. You have to have a decent grasp on "right" from "wrong" mixed in with a little bit of empathy to really get sucked into Momento. And I think these are concepts my ex really struggled with within himself. I think there's a good possibility he truly didn't get it.
Maybe when I start dating again I'll have to put that movie in my list of requirements, ha!
But for real, what experiences do others here have that said to you at the time "well that did seem a little odd?" Maybe my story is a bit of a stretch and I'm over-analyzing it, but I do always enjoy reading about the anecdotes and events you guys share.

She would always give more money than she should of too us for Christmas and birthdays, and never tried to embarrass us over what we gave her. We ALWAYS left price tags on the gift with anyone in that family to make it easier to exchange. I think I now remember why I never liked the Holidays!!!
My family loved whatever we gave them just because it came from us.
There's so many things they do to make us feel crazy and unworthy, you think it'd be easier to get over them and move on! Jeez!!!
