Physical & Emotional Abuse Support Group
Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
Whether your self-regard/self-worth is low just at this moment or has always been an issue, now is the moment to address this and work to build and strengthen it. One way to begin is to find a counselor whose specialty is recovery from abuse.
Another tool to build self-worth is to focus on what makes you feel happy and worthwhile and to do lots of that. Over time, this builds self-regard.
Moving away from living with abuse to living abuse-free, is a challenge and a journey.
Sending you hugs
and wishes for
healing and
happiness.
I'm glad that your dr will be helping you find a therapist. Ask her to recommend only those who are certified in trauma release/recovery, have extra training in the dynamics and effects of abuse. Sadly many therapists are not.
Here is a link to some questions to ask a potential therapist. They are based on what I've learned in my training and my personal experiences after going to a number of therapists/counselors who caused more harm than good.
I agree w/h.e.a.l. 100%.
One of the things I did after I left was to make a list of things that I used to like. Then I made a list of things I might be interested in. I took some of the free online interest tests. I volunteered doing things I enjoyed doing. I took adult ed classes. I started doing a hobby I hadn't done in years. I was so used to doing what he wanted/liked that it took a good while to figure out what I wanted/liked. Create a vision board or write a letter to the universe asking for what you want. You might change them every day, but that's ok. Just take the time to get to know and love YOU!!
Please allow yourself however much time you need to figure things out. Honor, allow & feel your feelings w/o judgment. Journaling can be helpful too.
And keep practicing extreme self-care. ~healing hugs~
