Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
There's a Chinese lady where I work who is almost certainly in an abusive situation. She met her husband online and moved here to marry him. It is very clear from the things she says about her husband that he thinks he has bought her.
I'm not sure if there's anything I can or should do about the situation but maybe she should be made aware of help that could be available if she wanted it. Providing her with information in English would be pointless as her reading ability is very low and possibly dangerous if the husband were to find it.
