Abuse is a general term for the treatment of someone that causes some kind of harm (to the abused person, to the abusers themselves, or to someone else) that is unlawful or wrongful. No one deserves abuse, period. Abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual.
Although I did not marry my ex (thank the lord),

If he's calling you all sorts of names and wants to "win", that can be used to your advantage. Anything that distracts him (her) can be used to your advantage.
Make a list of things he (she) wants, but that you don't care about (tools, property, cars, furniture). Those are all things that you can one by one let him(her) "win" on.
The fewer things that you have on a list that you want...the better.
The house. Everyone seems to fight over the "house". Got to keep the kids in the "home".
Nope. Kids are remarkably unattached to their houses. Most of them actually want to move out at 18.
Then you may be left in a house that's too big, too expensive, and has too many memories. Meanwhile the kids may like going over to the apartment where they aren't haunted by the memories themselves.
There's a LOT to be said for a place to live that's your own, that's comfortable, welcoming and happy.
