Phobia Support Group
A phobia (from the Greek "fear"), is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities, or persons. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. When the fear is beyond one's control, or if the fear is interfering with daily life, then a diagnosis under one of the anxiety disorders can be made.
I have a really awful needle phobia, my periods are god-awful, and I want nothing to do with kids, so pregnancy is about the last thing I'd want anyway. My boyfriend (who I've been dating for over 5 years) at first wanted kids, but now seems to accept the fact that I may never end up wanting them in my life. A natural, complication free childbirth isn't something that I fear, but all the prenatal checkups, a hospital birth, and any kind of complication that would require more tests and/or surgery (and therefore more needles) is >_>.. And since the common trend with doctors these days is too much intervention, as opposed to minimal, you can probably see why that would be a problem..
Firstly just want to say you are not alone, I have suffered from tokophobia since I was about 16. I have had counselling and prescribed anti-depressants which helped me get through everyday life. I know exactly what you are going through but there is hope. If you really want children you can achieve this. I now have a 17 month old girl and I never thought I would say this but I would have another. When I found out I was pregnancy it was instant panic and more anti-depressants but after the first 3-4 months things got better everyday and I enjoyed my pregnancy. I got the ball rolling in about 2002 by contacting my GP and hospital to discuss booking a c-section which I made sure they confirmed in writing to me. My GP and hospital were very understanding as they had dealt with this before and I had no problem getting a c-section.
Hope this helps.
